The History Education Dissertation Prize is awarded to doctoral thesis that in the view of history educators has the most practical use to them. Through this award, we want to recognize the value of research for the advancement of teaching and learning history and promote its use by educators. This will help to reduce the gap between academic research and practice.
The prize:
The winner will get 1000 euro. The runner ups will get 500 euro. The top 3 applicants will be invited, all costs covered, to the EuroClio Annual Conference in 2026, which will take place on 26 – 29 April in Brussels.
Here they can:
- Present their research.
- Meet with the EuroClio Research Fellows.
- Record a podcast about their research.
All top 3 applicants will have their research findings converted in an animation format and their work will be shared via the communication channels of the organisers.
Eligibility:
Scholars who successfully defended their PhD theses between January 1st 2022 and December 14th 2025. The research must have a practical applicability for history teachers. There are no restrictions in terms of research focus on any specific region, period, or theme – submissions from all over the world are welcomed. The thesis can be written in any language, but the application files need to be written or translated into English.
Applicants must be willing and available to
- Present their research in person at the EuroClio conference.
- Work with a visual artist on an animation.
Only submissions that are on time will be considered.
Timeline:
- Applicants must submit their application by 15 December 2025.
- The applications are reviewed and informed about the outcome by 15 January 2026.
- The three shortlisted applicants work with a visual artist to present their research and its practical application in the form of an animation in February and/or March 2026.
- The voting will be opened to history teachers and history teacher organisations who are verified by EuroClio on 15 April 2026.
- The winner was announced during the annual conference on 29 April 2026.
