Call for Participants – European Seminar on Teaching about the Roma and Sinti Holocaust

Call for Participants – European Seminar on Teaching about the Roma and Sinti Holocaust

In the framework of the joint project between the European Union and Council of Europe entitled “Roma Holocaust Remembrance and Education”,  EuroClio and the Council of Europe Roma and Travellers Division are pleased to invite history and citizenship educators to a seminar on teaching about the Roma and Sinti Holocaust taking place in Heidelberg, Germany, 19-21 November 2026.

The Seminar, organised in cooperation with the University of Heidelberg’s Research Centre on Antigypsyism, the Observatory on History Teaching in Europe and the European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture will feature:

  • a guided tour of the Documentation and Cultural Center of German Sinti and Roma, followed by a reflection and peer learning session;
  • hands-on workshops introducing participants to Council of Europe materials on teaching about the Roma, Sinti and related groups’ histories;
  • workshops and lectures by leading academics in the field of antigypsyism and Roma/Sinti history, with a particular focus on the Holocaust.

Target audience, eligibility, deadline

The Seminar will welcome up to 30 history and citizenship educators based in Europe. This includes teachers of history, citizenship/civics, and related topics at the secondary education level, teacher educators at tertiary education institutions, school leaders, curriculum developers, and textbook authors.

The seminar will be conducted in English only and a good command of the English language is a requirement. We expect participants to arrive on Thursday 19/11 morning/afternoon and the programme will end on Saturday 21/11 lunch time with travel in the afternoon/evening.

Do you fit the description above? Please send us your application by Monday 19 October to secretariat@euroclio.eu with the email subject line ‘Heidelberg Seminar’. Please include your CV and a short motivation statement (approx. 200 words).

Final selection of participants will be done by EuroClio and the CoE and will seek to ensure a representative selection based on gender, level of experience and geographic spread. Preference will be given to educators able to further disseminate educational materials/approaches within their local/national contexts.

EuroClio can issue invitation letters to facilitate leave of absence requests. Participants will be given a Certificate of Participation.

What is covered?

We offer the following to selected participants:

  • Travel to/from Heidelberg (most economic option available, with preference for train travel if total duration does not exceed 7 hours, and up to 400€);
  • Accommodation – either at the University or at a nearby hotel, with breakfast included;
  • Lunches on Friday 20 November and Saturday 21 November and dinners on Thursday 19 November and Friday 20 November.

Questions?
