About the Project Monument(al) Challenges

School classrooms across Europe are continuing to become more and more diverse. At the same time, controversies over contested historical legacies in public spaces worldwide have increasingly led to contestations over cultural heritage and conflicts over the interpretation of national histories. The new EuroClio project Monument(al) Challenges, collaboratively implemented with the Contested Histories Initiative and funded by the European Union, aims to respond to some of the challenges educators across Europe face in teaching history. Specifically, we aim to address teachers’ requirements for resources and training materials that equip them with the skills to discuss sensitive and complex histories, including colonialism and slavery, in their classrooms.

At the beginning of the project, we conducted research to inform the development of a set of educational resources. These resources will include an educational toolkit and various teaching-learning materials consisting of lesson plans, learning strategies, learning activities, and source collections related to contested cultural heritage. These resources will be piloted in school classroom settings and teacher training workshops organised by the Team Members. They will be disseminated to a wider audience through workshops, a webinar series, and an accredited and self-paced online course, all of which aim to further support educators’ professional development.

How can you apply to join us?

You need to apply as a pair of two individuals. This is to ensure collaboration between educators and share responsibilities and workload.  Team Members will join the International Workshop in Belgrade, where they will be part of training workshops for educators dealing with contested histories in the classroom. 

We will select 18 teams for the initial stage to join the International Workshop. From those, 6 teams will be selected to join the train the trainer programme and organise local workshops to train their peers in the new materials and methodologies developed by the project. The selection of the team members will be based on the geographical spread of the teams to ensure diversity and active participation at the International Workshop.

The International Workshop will:

  • Provide training workshops for educators focusing on teaching about contested histories using contested statues and monuments.
  • Create a network of educators.
  • Provide a cultural programme.
  • Recruit Team Members for the project.

We are looking for history educators who have:

  • English language skills,
  • Experience or interest in teaching about contested histories,
  • Strong interest and motivation to test learning materials.
  • Ideally, access to local networks of educators/teachers.

We will be selecting a total of 25 participants for the event. Selections will be made in the first week of March.

What is covered?

All expenses relating to your travel to/from Belgrade and your accommodation and subsistence costs will be covered.
