The ISHD invites submissions for an upcoming book publication development showcasing the work of young scholars in the fields of History Didactics and Education, and Historical Culture (Public History). This volume aims to provide a platform for Ph.D. candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and early-career scholars (within five years of their Ph.D.) to share their theoretical, methodological, and empirical insights into the study of history teaching, learning, and history culture.

Scope and Themes

We welcome original research-based contributions on a wide range of topics related to history didactics, education history, and history culture, including (but not limited to):

• Theoretical Perspectives in History Didactics and Education

• Empirical Research on History Teaching and Learning (qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods)

• Historical Thinking and Historical Consciousness

• History Textbooks, Curricula, and Assessment

• Digital History Education and New Media

• Controversial Topics and Difficult Histories in the Classroom

• Teacher Training and Professional Development in History Education

• Comparative and International Perspectives on History Didactics

Submission Guidelines

We encourage submissions from Ph.D. candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and early-career scholars (within five years of their Ph.D.). The publication will include full chapters and short research reports:

• Chapter length: 6,000–8,000 words (including references)

All contributions must be:

• Original and unpublished

• Written in English

• Follow academic standards (APA, Chicago, or another specified citation style). Once the chapters are selected, reference guidelines will be provided.

• Supplemented with an abstract (max. 200 words), key words (max. 5), and short information about the author(s).

Review Process

All submissions will undergo a double-blind peer review process. Authors will receive feedback and may be asked to revise their manuscripts before final acceptance.

Important Dates

• Abstract Submission Deadline: 1 October 2025 (300–500 words)

• Notification of Acceptance: 15 December 2025

• Full Paper Submission Deadline: 1 May 2026

• Peer Review Feedback: 1 August 2026

• Final Submission Deadline: 30 September 2026

• Expected Publication Date: Spring 2027

Publication, Editors & Accessibility

The publisher will be announced once the abstracts have been reviewed. The intention is that the book should eventually be available via Open Access. The Editors will be Prof Susanne Popp (Former President ISHD & Honorary member) and Prof Elize S Van Eeden (ISHD Board member), (members of the internal ISHD “planning committee”).
