EuroClio Traineeship Programme

EuroClio Traineeship Programme

EuroClio offers a traineeship programme for university students at its secretariat in The Hague. The traineeships usually last approximately 6 months. Candidates must be enrolled at a university (bachelor’s or master’s) throughout the duration of the traineeship and must be available at least four days a week.

Calls for traineeships are ongoing. We accept a couple of Trainees for varying durations. Whenever a traineeship vacancy opens, we post a news article about it. If you are unsure, you can always reach out (contact details below).

More on our traineeship programme

The EuroClio Traineeship Programme provides students with the opportunity to gain practical experience working in an international NGO active in more than 50 countries. We maintain a network of 25000 inspiring history, citizenship and heritage education professionals around the globe. As a Trainee, you will get acquainted with and actively be involved in the organisation’s day-to-day operations, and you will be working on various projects and areas of work.

What do you offer?

As a Trainee at the EuroClio secretariat, you will be working on various events and multiple projects and be involved with stakeholder engagement daily. Therefore, we highly welcome candidates with a strong affiliation or interest in history (or history and civics education), interest in educational project management skills and who have a record of the following core skills and competences:

  • Accountability: taking responsibility for and ownership of work-related actions, following through on commitments and decisions made;
  • Attention to detail: certain tasks, like financial management, require detail-oriented accuracy. As a young professional, you will also be involved in financial management (scanning and processing receipts) for which a high sense of care is needed;
  • Adaptability: quickly adapting to changing or challenging circumstances, responding in innovative ways. This also includes the ability to swiftly adapt to the different needs of the secretariat and changing tasks;
  • Creativity and analytical thinking: project proposals, the development of educational resources, and other daily challenges in project management also require analysis and creative problem-solving;
  • Proactivity and independence: while teamwork is at the core of work at EuroClio, you will also be expected to work and to complete your tasks independently with minimal supervision – onboarding can lasts weeks if not a month or two, after which period we expect you to take initiative in order to learn what matters the most to you during your traineeship;
  • Intercultural communication and empathy: valuing and recognising diversity and the ability to communicate respectfully with colleagues and partners from any cultural, ethnic, or religious background at all times is a must in a multicultural professional environment such as ours;
  • Teamwork: at EuroClio, a lot of the work is done in teams with many different people, both inside and outside the secretariat. To successfully work as a team, accountability, transparent communication, and adaptability are essential skills to apply and to develop further;
  • Languages: fluency in spoken and written English is required, other languages are always a strong asset;
  • Knowledge of office software: experience in Google and Microsoft environments, as well as other office tools such as Zoom, WordPress, and various AI services, is a bonus.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to be eligible for the EuroClio Traineeship Programme, candidates must meet the following requirements at the start of the Programme:

  • To hold EU Citizenship (or an EU Residence Permit);
  • To be in the final stage of their Bachelor’s or Master’s studies in a relevant field of study, such as Education, History, Political Science, International Relations, Development Studies, Management, Business Administration or any other related field;
  • To be enrolled at university throughout the entire duration of the traineeship;
  • Under the age of 30 on the start date of the programme.

We strongly advise against combining the traineeship with any coursework or thesis writing. This way, you can get the most out of your traineeship experience.

What does EuroClio offer?

EuroClio offers a diverse and dynamic work environment at the secretariat in The Hague. As a Trainee, you will work with a highly passionate and driven network of professionals working in different contexts and circumstances worldwide. Depending on the project or area of work you are involved in, you might join a staff member on work trips abroad. You will also receive in-house training programmes adapted to your professional development needs and interests. You will be assigned a supervisor to manage your progress and discuss your professional development.

While our workload is high, we always aim to make sure that the programme meets your expectations and contributes to your future career interests and development. Throughout your traineeship, we are always happy to find ways to accommodate your professional learning goals.

If you are accepted, you can expect to learn in-depth and hands-on about various practical skills required to run any successful project, beginning from concept and fundraising to project coordination and event management. You will have the opportunity to work on several other competencies adjacent to this type of work, such as working with software, understanding procedures, communication strategies, (educational) content development, etc. Our past Trainees find this comprehensive experience a solid preparation for various other types of work in the field of NGO’s, history, education and activism.

EuroClio offers a workspace at the office in The Hague, with access to a work laptop if needed. Our work requires working from the office, though we also offer the flexibility of working remotely on some days of the week. Life and work balance is essential for our ethics, thus we always establish a balanced and flexible approach with the whole of the secretariat.

Trainees will receive a fee of 747 EUR per month based on a full-time traineeship. Should you need to move to The Hague for the traineeship, additional support can be arranged. Up to 100 EUR of local travel expenses (home—office commute) per month can be reimbursed. Please mind that finding affordable accommodation in the Netherlands is a challenging task. We recommend that you screen the possibilities, and we are always here to support you with this endeavour.

Application Procedure

You can apply by sending your CV and Motivation Letter to Ivan Milovanov (ivan@euroclio.eu), with the email subject “Traineeship Application.” The application procedure consists of two rounds, including written tasks and (online) interviews. References may be consulted at any stage of the application procedure. We suggest reading about our activities before applying. If you have any questions, Ivan is also available to answer them. If you are successful and receive an offer from us, you can talk to current Trainees and visit our office for an introduction.
