Are you passionate about bringing history to life for your students? Do you want to help shape an exciting new resource for educators like yourself? We need your input!

As part of the Monument(al) Challenges (MONCHAL) project, EuroClio and its partners are developing a toolkit featuring adaptable and transferable lesson plans for teaching history through monuments. We are now in the final stages of creating this toolkit and are seeking teachers to test it and provide valuable feedback, helping us refine it into an even more effective resource for educators worldwide.

The toolkit aims to make teaching sensitive histories innovative and more impactful. By focusing on monuments as tangible representations of the past, it encourages reflection on how public spaces represent diverse—and sometimes difficult—histories. The lessons foster critical thinking and open dialogue around key themes such as inclusivity, tolerance, and historical interpretation. Utilising place-based learning, the toolkit invites students to engage with the history around them, whether through monument visits or in-class activities.

We invite you to pilot 1-2 lessons with your students and send us your feedback before December 1st, 2024. After piloting, we will ask you to:

  • Complete a review grid
  • Share a short report with your reflections

The lesson plans cover examples from monuments in Denmark, the Netherlands, Cyprus, Serbia, the UK, South Korea, and the US. Since these lessons focus on the development of a specific skill or historical thinking concept, our goal is to make the methods easily transferable to a monument in your local area. You can either pilot the provided case study lesson with the specific monument, or adapt the teaching strategy of your choice to a monument that resonates with your students. By taking part, you will help shape a resource that will support teachers worldwide—and be among the first to benefit from its innovative content.

No time to test with students? We also welcome more theoretical feedback and reviews of the toolkit in its entirety.
