Call for Papers -MSA Nordic Confernce 2024 “The art of Conviviality”

Call for Papers -MSA Nordic Confernce 2024 “The art of Conviviality”

Call for Papers

MSA Nordic Conference 2024

Arranged by the Memory Association Nordic
In association with

  • Institute for Urban Research (IUR), Malmö university
  • Department of Society, Culture and Identity (SKI), Malmö University
  • The network “A New Generation of Scholars of Antisemitism” at Lunds University, funded by the Swedish Research Council

October 24–25, 2024

Deadline for submission of proposals: February 18, 2024

The topic of this year’s conference will be on memory’s role in sustaining or confronting racism. More specifically it will explore this role through the lense of conviviality – the process of cohabitation and co-creation across differences. Its focus will be the Nordic setting and the effect that the cultural memory of intercultural exchanges, especially colonialism, externally and internally, has had in the Nordic countries, with an emphasis on the last decades‘ far-right terrorist attacks.

In that regard, the organizers are calling for panel, roundtable, paper and art-based proposals that investigate potentialities, problematics, and preconditions of conviviality, co-creation and collaboration. They invite the contributors to go beyond offering critique from a detached position

The conference itself will also be a convivial event, taking place in the midst of a cultural festival produced by movements and community groups in Malmö.

They welcome panel, roundtable, paper or art-based proposals dealing with (but not restricted to) the following streams:

  1. Memories and counter-memories of racism
  2. Commemorations of Nordic colonialism
  3. Repeating, remembering, or working-through racism, vulnerability and grief
  4. Memory and conviviality in urban life and space
  5. Responding to racist attacks across time and space
  6. The memory studies scholar’s public role; memory studies and public humanities
  7. Arts based memory work
  8. Community art and memory-work; grass roots antiracist memory-work; memory-work as a movement repertoire

They will consider proposals based in different practices, including research, art, heritage, activism, and more.

Please submit your proposals (max 400 words) with short biographical note (max 200 words) to theartofconviviality@mau.se by February 18, 2024.
