EuroClio is excited to announce a new collaboration with the Roma and Travellers Team (Directorate General of Democracy and Human Dignity) at the Council of Europe. In 2023 and 2024, we will develop a set of teaching strategies, lesson plans and historical content briefs that focus on the history of Roma and Traveller communities across Europe.
The aim of this initiative is to increase the inclusion and positive representation of Roma and Travellers in school curricula and in history textbooks in particular. When included, they are often presented as victims or in stereotypical ways, leading to a misrepresentation of Roma and Traveller history and communities. Based on the Council of Europe’s Recommendation on the Inclusion of the History of the Roma and/or Travellers in School Curricula and Teaching Materials at the National Level ((CM/Rec(2020)2), EuroClio will as an external consultant cooperate with the Council of Europe, aiming to develop more inclusive teaching materials that ensure a positive representation of Roma and Travellers and offer historical content about the communities.
EuroClio is looking for authors who will help with the development of three teaching strategies to be delivered by February 2024. The teaching strategies can be based on existing resources that EuroClio has recently developed and will be adapted in such a way that they focus on specific aspects of Roma/Traveller history. Concretely, the authors could work on adaptations of the following resources:
- Sharing European Histories Teaching Strategy: Using stories of the past to teach students about the future
- Sharing European Histories Teaching Strategy: Using object biographies to reveal how pasts are interconnected
- Who Were the Victims of the National Socialists? A Toolkit for Place-based Learning
We also welcome any other suggestions for teaching strategies that you might have worked with in the past and of which you think would be a good fit for the topic.
As an author, you will work closely with the EuroClio Project Manager and participate in online meetings on a regular basis. Drafts of the teaching strategies will be periodically presented to the Council of Europe for review.
We are looking for history educators or history education professionals who have:
- Experience in teaching about Roma and Traveller history and/or historical expertise on Roma and Traveller history;
- Teaching experience with similar teaching strategies listed above and/or experience with developing teaching materials;
- Written fluency in English;
- Commitment and capacity to spend a dedicated few hours per week, including bi-weekly or monthly online meetings with the EuroClio Project Manager, until March 2023.
We offer a fixed fee of 500 EUR for developing one teaching strategy.
