The third Special Interest Group meeting for the project “Strategies for Inclusion” took place from 8 to 12 May in Brno and Prague, in the Czech Republic. This meeting proved to be very useful for the further development of the resources within the project. The Special Interest Group members received feedback and worked hard on their resources, which cover a variety of topics and forms. All resources aim to provide teachers with practical, hands-on learning activities and teaching strategies that help them to make history and citizenship education more inclusive.
When the participants arrived on Sunday, 7 May, there was already an opportunity to join a city tour in Prague given by Monika Mandelickova, one of the Special Interest Group members who kindly hosted the meeting in the Czech Republic. On Sunday evening, the group traveled by bus to the city of Brno, where they stayed until Wednesday. Here they held work sessions in the Labyrinth – Laboratory School, where Monika is a teacher, and visited the Museum of Romani Culture, where they were told about its educational programmes and got a guided tour.
From Wednesday evening to Friday, the programme continued in Prague. On Thursday, the Special Interest Group members continued working on their resources at the Charles University in Prague. In the afternoon a panel session, moderated by Bohumil Kartous, took place, which raised the discussion about inclusive education in different contexts. The discussion addressed the ongoing debates about the topic of inclusive education, the transition from special needs education to inclusive education, and reflected on the challenges in this process. On Friday, the group visited the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art, where the following steps in the project and the final training, which will take place in Hamburg in 2018, were discussed. After lunch, the participants learned about the educational programmes of the museum and visited the “Big Bang Data” exhibition, which was well received.
This third and last Special Interest Group meeting within “Strategies for Inclusion” proved an overall success for the participants. This meeting was also the last that EuroClio Project Manager Aysel Gojayeva joined. Her work has been much appreciated and all participants were happy to have her in this meeting.
