(Historical Thinking Concepts: Historical Perspectives and the Ethical Dimension)

This webinar examines how thinking routines can support students in developing historical perspective-taking, an important skill for understanding the complexity of past events. Drawing on concepts like historical perspectives and the ethical dimension, the session explores how students can learn to recognise that people in the past acted within specific contexts, values, and constraints.

Thinking routines provide structured opportunities for students to explore and compare different viewpoints within historical narratives. By guiding reflection and dialogue, these routines encourage students to consider how historical actors might have understood their situations and how different interpretations of the past emerge.

The webinar will present strategies that use thinking routines to help students analyse diverse perspectives, reflect on the relationship between past and present values, and engage in thoughtful discussion about historical and civic issues. While the conceptual framework of historical perspectives informs the discussion, the central focus of the session is the development of students’ skills in analysing viewpoints, engaging in dialogue, and reflecting critically on historical narratives.
