In September this year Palgrave Macmillan is publishing a comprehensive new guide to contemporary historical scholarship: the Palgrave Handbook of Research in Historical Culture and Education. Many associates of the Center for Historical Culture have contributed to this handbook. This volume comprises a broad interdisciplinary examination of the many different approaches by which contemporary scholars record our history. The editors – Mario Carretero, Stefan Berger and Maria Grever – provide a comprehensive overview by dividing the materials into four parts: Historical Culture and Public Uses of History, The Appeal of the Nation in History Education of Postcolonial Societies, Reflections on History Learning and Teaching, Educational Resources: Curricula, Textbooks and New Media. The handbook focuses on how citizens and societies make sense of the past through different ways of representing it. Contributors come from various countries of Northern and Southern America, Europe, North-Africa, Australia and Asia, resulting in an international perspective that does more justice to the complexity of this field of study. On top of that contributions come from researchers specialized in history, education, collective memory, museum studies, heritage, social and cognitive psychology and other social sciences, which stimulates an interdisciplinary dialogue.
