Pitesti Prison Memorial
Pitesti Prison Memorial Foundation is a private non-profit founded in Romania in 2011, dedicated to documenting and communicating the history of the former communist prison in Pitesti and Romania’s broader communist repressive system, with a focus on Pitesti Experiment/Phenomenon, and to preserve the memory of those who suffered or lost their lives in communist prisons. In 2014 the Foundation opened Pitesti Prison Memorial to the public, offering guided tours, conferences, summer schools, art performances and exhibitions. In 2016 the Foundation established Manuscris Publishing House, producing memoirs, studies, and audiobooks on political detention and repression. To reach younger audiences, the Foundation also founded the Museum of Communism for Children in 2022, providing workshops, dedicated textbooks and interactive exhibitions to teach the history of communism to children and teenagers aged 7 and above. In 2022 the Foundation was recognised as a public utility organisation by the Government of Romania. In 2023, by the efforts of the Foundation, the entire complex of the former prison was classified as a historical monument. Today, Pitesti Prison is on Romania‘s Indicative List for UNESCO World Heritage.
