The International Society of History Didactics presents: The EuroClio 2026 award winner, Dr Marjolein Wilke on Historical thinking in upper secondary education: teachers’ beliefs, effective instructional practices and potential civic effects.

This webinar provides an overview of a doctoral research project on fostering historical thinking in secondary history education. The dissertation addresses four key issues: the role of history teachers in developing practices that promote historical thinking, the design of instructional approaches that are both effective and socially valid, students’ development of historical thinking, and the potential contribution of historical thinking to democratic citizenship. These questions were investigated through three complementary studies: a qualitative study involving 21 history teachers, a design-based study focused on the development of a teaching unit on decolonization, and an intervention study examining the effects of this teaching unit.

The webinar presents the main findings of these studies, with particular attention to the results of the intervention study.
