SUMMARY:"Learning Local Football Histories: A Tool for Social Inclusion?" Seminar in Rotterdam
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday – 21 October – EuroClio will host a seminar at Erasmus University Rotterdam as part of the ongoing project\, “Football. A People’s History of Europe”\, which takes the history of football as a lens through which to explore wider historical themes in an accessible manner. The seminar is part of the Football People action weeks\, funded by the FARE Network and participants will have the opportunity to share experiences of using football to teach history and explore possibilities for closer cooperation building on existing initiatives. \nThe aim of the seminar is to present EuroClio’s common framework for creating educational resources that relate to local football history\, as well as the existing practices which harness the unique potential of football history to reach out to young learners. It will feature a group of professionals from relevant fields\, including history teachers\, sports journalists\, and football historians\, thus creating a diverse and active network that can further develop the intermingling of local football history and history education beyond the event.

SUMMARY:Europeana DSI-3 Kick-off Meeting
DESCRIPTION:EuroClio will be represented by Steven Stegers and Jaco Stoop at the kick-off meeting for the latest collaboration with Europeana – DSI-3. The project will continue the work of its predecessors DSI-1 and DSI-2 in tackling the question of “how to unlock the potential for use of digital heritage for (history) education?”. Within this\, there will be a focus on web development and the further integration of Europeana and Historiana in order to make them more user-friendly\, thus allowing for their optimal use in history education. The project will aim to develop teaching resources across the two platforms\, as well as teacher training guides on the use of these platforms and resources. \nThe purpose of the meeting – which will take place from October 16-17 in Egmond aan Zee in the North of the Netherlands – is to discuss what is expected of the project\, and how the involved partners will work together during its execution.

DESCRIPTION:Going Beyond Pride and Pain? ‘History that Connects the Balkans’ – 3rd Annual Regional Summer School\n\n \n  \nIn 2017\, EuroClio organised the third regional summer school together with the Association of History Educators of Albania (ALBNA). The general theme for the Summer School was ‘Going Beyond Pride and Pain’. Recently in the Balkan region\, history education is utilised to reflect the past achievements of the nation (pride)\, and stress the injustice inflicted upon the nation by others (pain). During the Summer School the aim was to develop a new look on one’s own history in the Balkan region. \nWith the summer school\, EuroClio and the Association of History Educators of Albania (ALBNA) sought to provide transnational transfer of knowledge and experience.  Through lectures\, workshops\, discussion groups and study visits\, heritage/history educators\, researchers and policy makers were stimulated to implement innovative teaching practices in their classroom and/or institute to work towards a framework for common approach for dealing with history. SUMMARY:Historical Thinking Summer Institute
DESCRIPTION:From 17 to 22 July 2017\, the Historical Thinking Summer Institute will take place at the Canadian War Museum / Canadian Museum of History in Ottawa\, Canada. \nThe Historical Thinking Summer Institute is designed for teachers\, curriculum developers\, professional development leaders\, historians\, museum educators and curators who want to enhance their expertise at designing history programs\, courses\, units\, lessons\, projects\, or educational resources that explicitly focus on historical thinking. Historical thinking is now a foundation for history and social studies curricula across the country and internationally\, and museum and heritage educators are similarly embracing it. \nAttendees of the 2017 Historical Thinking Summer Institute will participate in a variety of activities including presentations and workshops\, learning activities in the exhibitions at the Canadian Museum of History and the Canadian Ware Museum\, discussions of readings\, guest lectures\, and group work to explore six historical thinking concepts: evidence\, significance\, continuity & change\, cause & consequence\, perspective-taking\, and the ethical dimension of history. \nThese concepts will shape our exploration of the substantive theme of this year’s institute “Thinking Historically about Canada 150.” July 1\, 2017 marks the 150th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation\, an event that is not without controversy for many people in Canada. SUMMARY:A Multiperspective Understanding of the Past: The Elephant in the Room of Diverse Societies?
DESCRIPTION:Dealing with sensitive histories through intercultural dialogue\n\nDutch society is diverse\, and Dutch citizens express in everyday life their multiple identities and perspectives. However\, Dutch society has also seen plenty of controversy when a one-sided view on history and heritage has inflamed public debate. We need to get to the root causes of this kind of conflict\, radicalisation and polarisation. Could people’s interpretations of the past be one of these root causes? \nWhereas every society has its own peculiar struggle with ‘dealing with the past’\, there is an emerging understanding of common challenges. \nOn the 14th of July\, the symposium “The Past: The Elephant in the Room of Diverse Societies?” will bring together views and experiences of civil society activists\, including educators\, cultural workers\, and engaged citizens\, from The Netherlands\, as well as Bosnia-Herzegovina\, India\, Lebanon and Ukraine. \nWhat can you expect?\nWe will start the day with a critical look at Dutch society from the perspective of an outsider and an insider\, introducing relevant debates surrounding the Golden Coach and Black Pete controversies. Dr. Timothy Ryback\, contributor to The New Yorker and director of the Institute of Historical Justice and Reconciliation\, will share his view on the ethics of facing historical legacies of the past. In particular\, the discussion will address difficult issues of identity\, belonging\, and polarisation. It is clear from the public debate in The Netherlands that radically opposing views on these matters challenge social cohesion. \nGlobal perspectives\, including those from Colombia\, Croatia and South Africa\, will be introduced by leading history educators who have traveled across the world to share their experiences and gain new insights. Their personal and professional journeys demonstrate the difficult nature of dealing with the past in divided\, post-conflict societies. Often the recent\, violent past has directly and immediately impacted their lives. SUMMARY:Meaning\, Thinking and Learning in History Conference in Jyväskylä\, Finland
DESCRIPTION:Meaning\, Thinking and Learning in History seeks to strengthen research on history pedagogy by furthering cooperation between history education practice and research. History as both a discipline and school subject is in motion\, receiving increasing demands from the surrounding society. Focusing on textbook-driven narratives is usually not enough to meet the demands of the curricula or of students. The primary goal of this conference is to encourage collaboration and foster dialogue between professional historians\, education scholars\, graduate students\, and classroom teachers in order to find ways of balancing the scholarship on the pedagogy of history with increasing demands and classroom realities. \nOver the course of this two-day conference\, scholars\, teachers and practitioners will share their research findings\, offering examples of cutting-edge approaches and engaging in dynamic discussions that will help nurture intercultural dialogue and bridge scholarly and practical questions. Keynote lectures will be given by Bob Bain (University of Michigan) and Henrik Meinander (University of Helsinki). \nThe conference invites proposals for presentations\, panels and workshops by 15 January\, 2017. To learn more visit the teho2017en.wordpress.com and in twitter #teho2017. \nThe conference is bilingual\, in English and Finnish. The Education Partnership for Advocacy\, Capacity-Building and Transformation (ePACT) is an initiative of two civil society organizations with a proven track record in the field of education. EuroClio –  and CDRSEE – Centre for Democracy and Reconciliation in South East Europe have worked for over 20 years in the region\, providing opportunities for regional cooperation and promoting innovative and responsible history education. The initiative seeks to build on these experiences by building sustainable partnerships in the region for systemic change in education. Practitioners and policy makers benefit from intensified relation and cooperation as it strengthens capacity for both reform and implementation. The aim of the visits is to  interview civil society actors\, teachers and students to find out about the practical challenges related to dealing with conflicting memories and narratives\, dealing with emotional and difficult histories\, dealing with uncertainties and sensitivities in order to document collected practices and practical recommendations in the form of a blog post and a report based on the findings from this data gathering that can be used for advocacy on global\, regional\, and national levels. \nThe study visit is co-organised by the National Center for Historical Memory. During the visit itself\, Jusic and Malhotra will meet with several NGOs\, museum educators\, and government officials. In addition\, the two will attend history classes and discuss and interview students and history educators.

SUMMARY:Learning a History that is not yet History?-authors team event in Belgrade\, Serbia
DESCRIPTION:How to teach the history of recent wars that is often considered not to be history yet\, but is remembered in so many different ways\, and has been investigated in great detail in the context of transitional justice? This is the main question the project seeks to answer by investing in a unique partnership among teachers and their associations from former Yugoslavia\, in which transnational teams will collaboratively create a free ready-to-use learning resource about the 1990s Yugoslav wars. \nThis resource explores how this history should be addressed in a multi-perspective way; how war impacts developed societies and everyday life and to what extent history educators can also address current wars across the world through the lens of the experiences in the wars of the 1990s. \nOn 16-18 December\, the authors of the Learning a History that is not yet History (LHH) get together in the Serbian capital to make further progress in the project. \nRead about the previous meeting in Zagreb here.

SUMMARY:Final Training of Silencing Citizens through Censorship-project in Skopje\, Macedonia
DESCRIPTION:The Silencing Citizens Through Censorship-project involves a transnational group of history and citizenship educators from EuroClio’s member Associations in France\, Germany\, Hungary\, Italy\, Macedonia\, Poland\, and Spain in the development and implementation of students-driven projects on censorship in Europe’s 20th century dictatorial and totalitarian regimes. The focus will be on the history of Franco’s Spain (1936 – 1975)\, Vichy France (1940 – 1945)\, Nazi Germany (1933-1945)\, Mussolini’s Italy (1922 – 1943)\, the post-1945 Hungarian ( – 1990) and Polish Republics (1944 – 1989) and the Republic of Macedonia as part of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia under Tito (1945 – 1980). During the project the team members will develop engaging and thought-provoking resources on striking historical examples of censorship with their students through the collection\, compilation and analysis of multi-perspective sources. Students with their teacher will then organise local public events such as exhibitions or debates to showcase the cases they researched in a way that questions the resonance of such history today. \n\n\n\n\n\n The team comes together in Skopje for an intensive final training.
