SUMMARY:Time to Think Webinar #4: Using Thinking Routines to Strengthen Historical Inquiry
DESCRIPTION:(Historical Thinking Concepts: Historical Significance and Cause & Consequence) \nThis webinar focuses on the role of thinking routines in supporting historical inquiry and questioning\, key skills for meaningful engagement with the past. Drawing on concepts like historical significance and cause and consequence\, the session explores how students can learn to ask deeper questions about historical events\, processes\, and interpretations. \nThinking routines can help structure inquiry by encouraging students to generate questions\, reflect on possible explanations\, and connect different pieces of information. Through these routines\, students are guided to consider why certain events or actors are considered historically significant and how different causes and consequences shape historical developments. \nThe webinar will present classroom strategies that use thinking routines to promote curiosity\, structured inquiry\, and critical reflection. Although historical thinking concepts provide an important analytical framework\, the main emphasis of the session is on developing students’ skills in questioning\, investigating\, and constructing informed historical explanations. \nRegistration

SUMMARY:Webinar: Historical thinking in upper secondary education: teachers' beliefs\, effective instructional practices and potential civic effects
DESCRIPTION:The International Society of History Didactics presents: The EuroClio 2026 award winner\, Dr Marjolein Wilke on Historical thinking in upper secondary education: teachers’ beliefs\, effective instructional practices and potential civic effects. \nThis webinar provides an overview of a doctoral research project on fostering historical thinking in secondary history education. The dissertation addresses four key issues: the role of history teachers in developing practices that promote historical thinking\, the design of instructional approaches that are both effective and socially valid\, students’ development of historical thinking\, and the potential contribution of historical thinking to democratic citizenship. These questions were investigated through three complementary studies: a qualitative study involving 21 history teachers\, a design-based study focused on the development of a teaching unit on decolonization\, and an intervention study examining the effects of this teaching unit. \nThe webinar presents the main findings of these studies\, with particular attention to the results of the intervention study. \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:International Symposium 2026
DESCRIPTION:How can we teach about migration in ways that are historically grounded\, inclusive and engaging? Join us on Friday\, 25 September at the Wereldmuseum Rotterdam for this year’s International Symposium: Teaching Migration: Exploring Histories of Migration in and Beyond the Classroom. Together with teachers\, teacher trainers\, educators\, researchers and other education professionals\, we will explore this question through inspiring workshops\, practical examples and exchanging ideas.  \nMigration is an integral part of our shared past and present. It has shaped societies\, cultures and identities throughout history\, and continues to influence our communities. While migration is often discussed as a contemporary issue\, exploring it through a historical lens helps us better understand both the continuities and the changes that have shaped Europe over time. As the topic becomes increasingly visible in public discourse and education\, it also raises important questions for educators. How can we teach about migration in ways that are historically grounded\, inclusive and engaging? How can we make space for different perspectives and lived experiences? How can we support learners with diverse backgrounds while encouraging meaningful dialogue in classrooms and other educational settings? \nThe International Symposium will invite participants to explore these questions through a keynote presentation\, a variety of interactive workshops and discussions. We will also explore the ways in which the Wereldmuseum Rotterdam connects objects to local migration history during a tour in the immediate surroundings of the museum\, and reflect on how you\, as an educator\, can apply this method in your context. Participants will discover practical teaching approaches\, educational resources and examples of how histories and experiences of migration can be explored through different historical sources\, such as biographies\, personal stories and local heritage.  \nYou can already register here and keep an eye out on our website and social media channels as the full programme and workshop offer will be launched very soon! \nWe look forward to seeing you at the Wereldmuseum Rotterdam! \nAdmission \nGeneral Admission: 20 EUR \nStudent:                      Free \nRetiree:                       Free \nCoffee\, snacks\, lunch and drinks are provided.  \nRegisterPROGRAMME

SUMMARY:Slow Looking with Europeana - What Images Reveal When We Give Them Time
DESCRIPTION:Educators looking for fresh\, practical classroom strategies are warmly invited to an interactive webinar with tried-and-tested tips for working with photographs\, paintings\, posters\, book covers\, illustrations\, film stills and other visual materials across subjects. Through engaging examples and hands-on activities\, we will explore how slowing down and looking more closely at such images can help learners notice details\, ask better questions\, support ideas with evidence\, make connections and reconsider first impressions. The goal is to help learners notice\, interpret\, and connect with images while reflecting on internal thoughts and feelings\, and turn these images – understood as cultural objects – into powerful starting points for curiosity\, critical thinking\, communication and deeper learning. \nOur facilitator will be Daniela Brunea\, with the support of Cristina Gîlă. \nDaniela Bunea is a passionate teacher of English and the coordinator of European projects in her school. She is dedicated to student-centred teaching and learning\, and has created numerous meaningful resources advocating for wellbeing\, reflection\, and emotional engagement in the classroom. Her work reflects sustained commitment to improving teaching practice and supporting learners in developing transferable skills. \nThe webinar will take place on October 20\, 2026\, between 15:30 and 16:30 CET. SUMMARY:NCH Conference: Attacks on History and Historians
DESCRIPTION:Attacks on History and Historians: Historical Studies\, History Education\, and Freedom \nInternational Conference 29-31 October 2026\, Academia Europaea Bucharest Hub\, Academia Română\, Calea Victoriei 125 \nFor more information\, see website of Academia Europaea Bucharest Hub. \nEuroClio is pleased to have partnered with Sorin Antohi (Academia Europaea\, Bucharest)\, Antoon De Baets (Network of Concerned Historians) and Ruben Zeeman (Network of Concerned Historians) in convening a conference on attacks on history\, historians and history educators\, including censorship. \nThe event will serve as a launch event of the forthcoming Palgrave Handbook of Attacks on History\, initiated and edited by Antoon De Baets (EuroClio professor emeritus of history\, ethics\, and human rights\, University of Groningen). Antoon De Baets has long been thinking\, communicating\, and advancing a human rights framework in order to address all forms of attacks on history and historians. This approach has inspired many researchers around the world\, resulting in a long series of conference and congress presentations\, academic papers and volumes\, public debates\, panels\, and colloquia. This conference is bringing this long-term process to its conclusion\, by involving the editor and some of the contributors to the above-mentioned reference work\, various other researchers\, educators\, and public figures from many countries on several continents. \nAs part of the Conference EuroClio and the NCH is co-hosting a panel discussion on censorship in history education\, with prof. Indah Utami (Indonesia)\, dr. Noémi Levy-Aksu (Turkey) and Anna Skiendziel (Poland). The panel discussion will be done in a hybrid format\, enabling online participation\, and will take place on 31 October 09:00-12:00. Further details and a registration link for online participation will follow shortly. \nConference partners: International Commission of History and Theory of Historiography (ICHTH)\, Academia Europaea (Section of History & Archaeology)\, Network of Concerned Historians\, EuroClio\, Bucharest City Hall\, University of Bucharest\, Institutul pentru Investigarea Crimelor Comunismului și Memoria Exilului Românesc (IICCMER) Institutul de Istorie “Nicolae Iorga”\, Universitatea “Petre Andrei”\, Georg Eckert Institute \nConvenors: Sorin Antohi\, Antoon De Baets\, Andreas Holtberget\, Ruben Zeeman

SUMMARY:Time to Think: When the Answer Changes – Thinking Routines for Revising Historical Claims
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is part of the Time to Think Project. \nHistorical thinking involves being prepared to reconsider an explanation when new evidence\, questions or interpretations emerge. This webinar explores how Thinking Routines can make revision an explicit part of learning history. Participants will work with activities in which students develop an initial claim\, encounter additional evidence or competing explanations\, and then revisit what they previously thought. The session will examine how teachers can create space for students to qualify\, modify\, or reject earlier conclusions\, making intellectual revision part of historical reasoning rather than simply correcting an incorrect answer. \nThe webinar will take place on November 3\, 2026\, between 17:00 and 18:00 CET. You can register using the button below to receive the webinar link. Hoping to see you there! \nRegistration

SUMMARY:Time to Think: What Would You Need to Know? Thinking Routines for Historical Problematisation
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is part of the Time to Think Project. \nHistorical enquiry begins not only with questions\, but with recognising that something requires explanation. This webinar explores how Thinking Routines can help students transform observations\, contradictions and gaps in their knowledge into historical problems worth investigating. Participants will experiment with activities that ask students to identify what they know\, what remains unexplained\, what evidence they would need and how their questions change during an enquiry. The session will consider how students can gradually take greater responsibility for constructing historical problems rather than simply responding to questions provided by the teacher. \nThe webinar will take place on November 17\, 2026\, between 17:00 and 18:00 CET. You can register using the button below to receive the webinar link. Hoping to see you there! \nRegistration

SUMMARY:Time to Think: How Far Can We Know? Thinking Routines for Uncertainty\, Silence and Historical Evidence
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is part of the Time to Think Project. \nHistorical evidence does not always permit complete or certain answers. This webinar explores how Thinking Routines can help students distinguish between what the evidence establishes\, what can reasonably be inferred and what remains unknown. Participants will work with incomplete\, ambiguous and sometimes contradictory evidence\, including historical silences\, and consider how students can communicate different degrees of certainty. Rather than treating gaps as problems to be filled through speculation\, the session will explore how the limits of the historical record can themselves become part of historical enquiry. \nThe webinar will take place on December 1\, 2026\, between 17:00 and 18:00 CET. You can register using the button below to receive the webinar link. Hoping to see you there! \nRegistration

SUMMARY:Time to Think: Same Evidence\, Different History? Thinking Routines for Building and Testing Interpretations
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is part of the Time to Think Project. \nHistorical interpretations are constructed through choices about evidence\, emphasis\, connections and explanation. This webinar explores how Thinking Routines can help students understand why different historical accounts can emerge without reducing disagreement to a simple question of bias or opinion. Participants will compare developing interpretations\, identify the evidence and assumptions on which they depend\, and test how well each account explains the historical problem under investigation. The session will focus on helping students move between evidence and interpretation\, challenge an existing account\, and construct increasingly defensible interpretations of their own. You can find more information about the project on our website. You can sign up here for the First Online Peer Learning Activities. \nThe webinar will take place on January 12\, 2027\, between 17:00 and 18:00 CET.
