SUMMARY:Re-Centering Indigenous Approaches: Resolving Contradictions in History Education - Online Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Online Webinar on November 4\, 2026.\n15:30-16:30 (CET Time)\n16:30-17:30 (SAST Time) \nHow can we transform history education within its current colonial framing? \nOrganised in collaboration with International Society for History Didactics (ISHD)\, North-West University (NWU)\, University of Education (UEW) and University of Helsinki\, this webinar aims to explore contemporary teaching practices related to colonisation\, with a particular focus on the South African model. \nDrawing from a materialist-dialectical perspective\, this presentation argues that systemic contradictions\, namely the deep structural tensions within an educational system\, are actually the primary drivers of innovation and change. In using South Africa as a case study\, the discussion for this webinar explores the critical tension between two opposing worldviews: \n\nThe Western Disciplinary Approach\, which privileges written sources and specific analytical historical thinking skills.\nThe Indigenous Approach\, which emphasizes an interconnectedness paradigm where non-humans also shape how the past is interpreted and understood.\n\nRather than treating this clash as an impasse\, this discussion will demonstrate how investigating these opposing forces can catalyse systemic transformation. By adopting the Cycle of Expansive Learning Model\, this webinar offers a practical\, generative framework to question existing practices\, resolve these pedagogical contradictions\, and design new educational spaces where both Western and Indigenous ways of dealing with the past can dynamically coexist. \nThe webinar facilitator will be Bongani Shabangu\, History Lecturer (PhD-Candidate) from the Dept. of Commerce and Social Sciences in Education of the North-West University\, Potchefstroom\, in South Africa. \nFind the event poster here and register via the link below! \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Time to Think: What Would You Need to Know? Thinking Routines for Historical Problematisation
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is part of the Time to Think Project. \nHistorical enquiry begins not only with questions\, but with recognising that something requires explanation. This webinar explores how Thinking Routines can help students transform observations\, contradictions and gaps in their knowledge into historical problems worth investigating. Participants will experiment with activities that ask students to identify what they know\, what remains unexplained\, what evidence they would need and how their questions change during an enquiry. The session will consider how students can gradually take greater responsibility for constructing historical problems rather than simply responding to questions provided by the teacher. \nThe webinar will take place on November 17\, 2026\, between 17:00 and 18:00 CET. You can register using the button below to receive the webinar link. Hoping to see you there! \nRegistration

SUMMARY:Time to Think: How Far Can We Know? Thinking Routines for Uncertainty\, Silence and Historical Evidence
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is part of the Time to Think Project. \nHistorical evidence does not always permit complete or certain answers. This webinar explores how Thinking Routines can help students distinguish between what the evidence establishes\, what can reasonably be inferred and what remains unknown. Participants will work with incomplete\, ambiguous and sometimes contradictory evidence\, including historical silences\, and consider how students can communicate different degrees of certainty. Rather than treating gaps as problems to be filled through speculation\, the session will explore how the limits of the historical record can themselves become part of historical enquiry. \nThe webinar will take place on December 1\, 2026\, between 17:00 and 18:00 CET. You can register using the button below to receive the webinar link. Hoping to see you there! \nRegistration

SUMMARY:Time to Think: Same Evidence\, Different History? Thinking Routines for Building and Testing Interpretations
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is part of the Time to Think Project. \nHistorical interpretations are constructed through choices about evidence\, emphasis\, connections and explanation. This webinar explores how Thinking Routines can help students understand why different historical accounts can emerge without reducing disagreement to a simple question of bias or opinion. Participants will compare developing interpretations\, identify the evidence and assumptions on which they depend\, and test how well each account explains the historical problem under investigation. The session will focus on helping students move between evidence and interpretation\, challenge an existing account\, and construct increasingly defensible interpretations of their own. You can find more information about the project on our website. You can sign up here for the First Online Peer Learning Activities. \nThe webinar will take place on January 12\, 2027\, between 17:00 and 18:00 CET. You can register using the button below to receive the webinar link. Hoping to see you there! \nRegistration
