SUMMARY:Annual British Association of Holocaust Studies (BAHS) Conference 2016
DESCRIPTION:The Presence of the Holocaust in society\, politics and culture\, c.1970 – 2015 \nThe UCL Centre for Holocaust Education is hosting the annual British Association of Holocaust Studies (BAHS) conference. The conference will focus on the ‘Presence of the Holocaust’ in society\, politics and culture since 1970 and explore the growth and development of Holocaust history and memory over the past four decades. \nThe conference is specifically concerned with how the collective conception of the Holocaust has developed since the mid to late 1970s. Ours is the generation in which Holocaust memory has grown exponentially\, expanding and extending at such a rate that it not only permeates Western culture and society\, but now has global proportions. Nor is there any indication of this slowing down; increased concern at the passing of survivors has given but further impetus to attempts to teach\, learn\, and remember the Holocaust\, whilst its continued representation raises ongoing interest in its abstraction and appropriation.

SUMMARY:EuroClio's Regional Summer School Montenegro 2016
DESCRIPTION:Learning through Entangled Legacies in History Education and Cultural Heritage\n\n \n  \nThe 2016 Summer School was organised together with the History Teachers Association of Montenegro (HIPMONT). Each country has their own legacy of the past and when these legacies get entangled\, teaching history becomes more and more difficult. However\, taught correctly multiple legacies can teach more than one single legacy and help to create multi-perspectivity. The 2016 Summer School addressed the issue: Learning through entangled legacies in history education and cultural heritage. \nThe Summer School sought to combine educators working in history and heritage through interactive workshops on innovative on-site learning. In previous years the organisers put great care in setting up a rich in content and intensive programme to which a wide range of local and international experts contributed. This year was no different\, and the EuroClio Secretariat worked hard to compile an attractive programme\, to which representatives of national and transnational educational authorities  contributed. \nIt was a capacity-building event which provided a transnational transfer of knowledge and experience.  Through lectures\, workshops\, discussion groups and study visits\, participating history and heritage educators were stimulated to implement innovative teaching practices in their classroom and/or museum/site/institute and to work towards a framework for a common approach for dealing with history. Participants improved their knowledge of cultures and got acquainted with new educational contents\, services\, and methods. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExtra Information\n\n[su_accordion] \n[su_spoiler title=”Aims” open=”yes”] \n[su_list icon=”icon: caret-right”] \n\nTo compare and contrast perspectives on social and cultural local history and heritage\nTo build the capacity of the participants in the teaching and learning of entangled legacies in the region\nTo connect with institutes and cultural entrepreneurs active in the cultural heritage for engagement of young people and school-going children\nTo enable dialogue and cross-community and trans-border networking\nTo learn more about innovative history and heritage teaching resources produced by amongst others EuroClio\, UNESCO\, the Council of Europe\nTo engage in a regional debate on the role of history and heritage education in the promotion of innovating on-site learning\n\n[/su_list] \n[/su_spoiler] \n[su_spoiler title=”Programme”] \nThe Regional Summer School will be from 12 – 17 July 2016 and is a 5-day experience of professional development workshops\, networking and on-site learning. \n\nMeet history and heritage educators from South East Europe\nSupport EuroClio’s work in building a history that connects\nShare your inputs on how to teach common imperial legacies and the role of heritage in workshops\nBuild partnerships with leaders of history teachers associations\n\nYou can download the Programme on the right. \n[/su_spoiler] \n[su_spoiler title=”Logistics and Fees”] \n[su_list icon=”icon: caret-right”] \n\nSummer School will take place at the Monterosa hotel \, Montenegro\, 12-17 July 2016 (Arrival 12 July\, departure 17 July)\nAccommodation during the Summer School is arranged by the organizers\nThe Fee for 5 days is €395\,- in total per person including accommodation\, breakfast\, coffee breaks\, lunches\, dinners\, local travel and on-site learning.\n\n[/su_list] \n[/su_spoiler] \n[/su_accordion] \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDownloads \n\nSummer School Programme \nSummer School Report \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLimited places available!\n\nRegistrations for this year’s Regional Summer School are closed. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nContact\n\nFor further information or any questions or inquiries you can contact the seminar organizer Judith Geerling. SUMMARY:2016 International Conference on History Education for Peace in East Asia and Europe
DESCRIPTION:A unique gathering of educators and civil society practitioners from East Asia and Europe to explore the role of international cooperation\, history education and civil society in establishing sustainable peace in East Asia in dialogue with Europe. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1\n2\n3\n4\n5\n\nLooking back at…\nEuroClio\, was the proud and selected host for the International NGOs Forum on History and Peace in Leiden\, Utrecht and The Hague. Together with the International History NGO for History and Peace they aimed to organise a Conference focusing on History and Peace. In many ways the goal of gaining a better common understanding of the role of international relations\, history education and civil society in establishing sustainable peace in East Asia in a dialogue with Europe\, was achieved. \nIn the evaluation one of the participants concluded: “The conference was excellent in every regard. It was particularly rewarding to have such a large number of excellent Asian scholars. I might note in particular the excellent presentation by Daching Yong\, as well as the moving address by the elderly Korean woman who relayed her experiences with such emotional and moral force.” \nEuroClio devoted an article to each day\, with an emphasis on the daily focus. If you would like to continue reading about Historical Justice in Europe and East-Asia\, the history of colonialism and World War Two in Europe and East Asia or Global History in the 21st Century\, please follow one of the links. \n \nThe Programme\n6 July @ The Hague Institute for Global Justice\nHistorical Justice in Europe and East Asia\nKey Note speech by Prof. Dr. Antoon de Baets\, followed by presentations\, and visits to The Hague – City of Peace and Justice.\nReport: “Teaching about Historical Justice at the Europe-Asia Conference in The Hague“ \n7 July @ Leiden University\nAddressing the history of colonialism and World War 2 in Europe and East Asia: comparing and contrasting\nVisit to LeidenAsiaCentre\, discussion panels and thematic workshops\nReport: “Comparing and Contrasting European and East Asian History“ \n8 July @ Utrecht University\nTeaching global history in the 21st century: challenges and opportunities and the role of teachers\nPanel presentations on peaceful cooperation in East Asia\, workshops by university lecturers\nReport: “Teaching for Peace in Practice – Challenges and Opportunities“ \nDownloads\nBackground Note\nMany tensions in the world are rooted in history and the way in which it is learned at school\, perceived in public\, and addressed politically can be seen to either resolve or sustain these tensions. This is in particular the case for East Asia\, where history is at the top of political and civil agenda\, aiming to address territorial disputes\, controversial commemorations and historical interpretations. Also history education\, in particular textbooks\, is constantly in the spotlight. \nThe annual International NGOs Forum on History and Peace\, co-organized by the International History NGO for History and Peace\, already since 2008 is a unique platform for cooperation among thousands of representatives of civil society\, education and research with a focus on strengthening cooperation between China\, South Korea and Japan\, as well as fostering co-operation across East Asia and beyond. With many strong civil society partners\, the Forum has initiated and partnered on a variety of projects and partnerships\, which include the production of joint history textbooks\, youth and teacher exchanges. \nThe Forum has also always sought to connect with political representatives\, civil society\, experts and educators from across the world. It has worked closely with different key organisations and expert on history in Europe. In the particular case of Europe\, the Forum aimed to compare and contrast pathways to truth-seeking\, historical dialogues and reconciliation\, as these have manifested themselves in Europe. \nOne of the key European partners for the Forum has been\, since 2009\, the EuroClio – Inspiring History and Citizenship Educators. This association\, established in 1992 and connecting over 30.000 professionals from over 50 countries\, supports the development of responsible and innovative history\, citizenship and heritage education as a way to promote critical thinking\, mutual respect\, peace\, stability and democracy. The Association advocates a sound use of history and heritage education towards the building and deepening of democratic societies\, connecting professionals across boundaries of countries\, ethnicities\, and religions. It seeks to enhance the quality of history and citizenship education through capacity building for educators and producing and implementing innovative teaching tools. \nEuroClio\, the selected host for the International NGOs Forum on History and Peace\, is proud to welcome history educators\, researchers\, civil society activists and political representatives from Europe\, East Asia\, and beyond\, to come to The Hague\, an International City of Peace and Justice\, on 6-8 July 2016 in order to gain a better common understanding of the role of international relations\, history education and civil society in establishing sustainable peace in East Asia in a dialogue with Europe. \nShow more Show less

SUMMARY:University of Hamburg Conference 2016
DESCRIPTION:From 1 – 3 July 2016 the Education Faculty of the University of Hamburg is organising a Conference on “On the Way to an Internationally Shared Assessment of Historical Thinking (?)”. Historical thinking is not at all restricted to the academic domain – it takes place at all times and at any place in our society. Therefore\, it must not be the aim of history teaching and learning to simply transfer the findings of historical research into the students’ heads. Below you can download the full programme. However many societies\, institutions or universities have different criteria for Historical Thinking. In Hamburg the conference discusses these differences. \n \n[download-attachments]

SUMMARY:European Remembrance Symposium: 2016 Budapest
DESCRIPTION:The year 1956 was a year that “shook the world”. The events of 1956 showed how much people of Eastern Europe wanted to overthrow the communist dictatorships. After Stalin’s death in 1953\, the crisis within the Eastern Bloc became imminent. After the uprisings in Berlin and Poznań events reached their climax on October 23\, 1956 in Budapest\, with the first armed battle against Soviet troops and communist leadership. This confrontation had an impact on the history of the whole Eastern bloc and became a benchmark for other movements in countries under Soviet dominance striving for self-determination and freedom and. It also anticipated the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989 and its legacy is present in contemporary memory in Europe and beyond. \nNext year marks the 60th anniversary of these events. To commemorate the Eastern Europeans’ struggle for independence\, the European Network of Remembrance and Solidarity and its partners\, the Hungarian Committee of National Remembrance and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences have decided to dedicate the next European Remembrance Symposium\, which will take place in May 2016 in Budapest\, to the events of 1956 and their legacy. \nThe European Remembrance Symposium is intended to serve as a platform for high-level discussions by government representatives\, academics\, and professionals from both NGOs and public institutions which are active in the field of remembrance in Europe\, dedicated to regional and global remembrance\, and willing to meet contemporary challenges in historical education and memory. \nParticipants will be confronted with the questions of what Stalinism and De-Stalinization in Eastern Europe was like and why these periods differed so much from country to country. Much attention will be given to the description of societies in Eastern Europe under communist rule and the techniques that communist regimes used for handling crises in their countries (including international comparisons\, e.g. the ‘successful’ – from a communist point-of-view – crisis management in Poland compared to the 1956 revolution in Hungary). The impact of Stalinism on everyday social life will also be debated. \nIt will also be important to examine the processes that led to 1956 on a regional level: Stalin’s death in 1953\, the Uprising in Plzeň\, the East German uprising\, the 20th congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union\, and the events in Poznań\, Warsaw and Budapest. Both regional (Eastern European) and global aspects of 1956 will be put in the spotlight. Although the significance of 1956 is widely acknowledged as a turning point of Eastern European history\, its global impact continues to be a controversial issue among historians. The Symposium will be an opportunity to discuss the global framework of 1956 and the relation of the 1956 events to other forms of struggle between the Eastern and Western Blocs\, like the Suez Canal crisis or the situation in the Far East and Africa. \nAnother key issue of the discussions will be the comparison between 1956’s short-term and long-term impacts and the analysis of 1956’s effects on Western Europe; how was the thaw and its consequences perceived in Western Europe? What kind of communication and reciprocal influence\, existed between “East” and “West”? In particular\, participants will consider U.S. foreign policy\, Western communist parties\, the effects and the perception of dissidents and emigrants from East Central Europe\, and finally the Holy See’s Eastern Bloc policy. \nThe Symposium will allow participants to investigate the direct and indirect consequences of 1956\, including retribution\, emigration\, and various forms of repression. Both short- and long-term impacts will be discussed\, including the post-1956 “refining” of communist dominance. This may encompass methods that rulers used to enforce power and to mobilize the people for an ostensibly better future as well as to ensure popular obedience\, such as threats of Soviet invasion\, law as a tool of subordination\, and the surveillance of religious groups and institutions. \nThe contemporary meaning and the legacy of 1956 will also be given much attention. Participants will analyse 1956’s influence on present-day art\, literature\, film\, political culture and historical memory. \nFinally\, a frequently debated topic is how European societies come to terms with totalitarianism/ authoritarianism\, communist crimes\, and how images of freedom tend to differ by country. The organizers would like to give participants an opportunity to discuss the differences in perception of freedom between countries of Eastern and Western Europe\, as well as to weigh the accomplishments of various institutions and NGOs which try to keep the memory of the struggle for freedom alive. \nThe Symposium is one of the principal projects of the European Network Remembrance and Solidarity\, which aims to research\, document\, and promote the remembrance and the study of totalitarianisms\, dictatorships\, and wars in 20th century Europe through the inclusion of the most recent academic discourse and multilateral dialogue concerning the different experiences of the past era.

SUMMARY:European Historical Forum: What brings us together\, what separates us?
DESCRIPTION:The Heinrich Böll Foundation (Heinrich Böll Stiftung) together with Memorial (Moskou) are organising another European Historical Forum. This year the Forum will evolve around the theme: What brings us together\, what separates us? European memories about fleeing and expulsion in the 20th century. Considering the current refugee crisis a very relevant and interesting theme. So far a number of interesting speakers will be attending the Conference including: Aleida Assmann (Universität Konstanz)\, Irina Sherbakova (Memorial\, Moskou)\, Gulnara Bekirowa (Political Scientist\, TV-producer\, Kiev) and Stefan Troebst (Universität Leipzig). \nThe Forum will address three main questions: \n\nHow can memory allowed and simultaneously conciliation promote – what will be remembered and what not?\nWhat have been the political and legal approaches in recent decades to deal with suffered injustice\, to bring compensation for losses and to make the necessary adjustments for the new reality today?\nWhich new (historical) identities occur in the target countries (Zielländern): what history and what historical lessons connect people\, whether they are fleeing\, displaced or home?\n\nThe language of the Conference will be German\, English and Russian. \nMore information will follow soon on their website. Until then… save the date!

This year the Conferences focuses on migration in Europea\, which has been a part of European history for ages. Somehow there is a gap between the mainstream narrative a\nnd the hard facts on migration and asylum in Europe. This Conference aims to figure just how big this gap is and how to understand and challenge this narrative. To participate in the Conference there was first an application procedure. EuroClio nominated our director Jonathan Even-Zohar and he will now represent our Association in Italy. \nFor more information on the event or programme check this website. \n
