SUMMARY:Dealing with the Past in History Education: Study Visit to Cape Town
DESCRIPTION:Core team members Khaled El Masri (Lebanese Association for History) and Michael Robinson (Facing History and Ourselves) will represent the Dealing With the Past project in a study visit to Cape Town\, South Africa. The aim of the visits is to  interview civil society actors\, teachers and students to find out about the practical challenges related to dealing with conflicting memories and narratives\, dealing with emotional and difficult histories\, dealing with uncertainties and sensitivities in order to document collected practices and practical recommendations in the form of a blog post and a report based on the findings from this data gathering that can be used for advocacy on global\, regional\, and national levels. \nThe study visit is co-organised by the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation. During the visit itself\, El Masri and Robinson will meet with several NGOs\, museum educators\, and government officials. In addition\, the two will attend history classes and discuss and interview students and history educators. \n\nDealing with the Past in History Education

SUMMARY:Learning a History that is not yet History?-authors team event in Belgrade\, Serbia
DESCRIPTION:How to teach the history of recent wars that is often considered not to be history yet\, but is remembered in so many different ways\, and has been investigated in great detail in the context of transitional justice? This is the main question the project seeks to answer by investing in a unique partnership among teachers and their associations from former Yugoslavia\, in which transnational teams will collaboratively create a free ready-to-use learning resource about the 1990s Yugoslav wars. \nThis resource explores how this history should be addressed in a multi-perspective way; how war impacts developed societies and everyday life and to what extent history educators can also address current wars across the world through the lens of the experiences in the wars of the 1990s. \nOn 16-18 December\, the authors of the Learning a History that is not yet History (LHH) get together in the Serbian capital to make further progress in the project. \nRead about the previous meeting in Zagreb here.

SUMMARY:Final Training of Silencing Citizens through Censorship-project in Skopje\, Macedonia
DESCRIPTION:The Silencing Citizens Through Censorship-project involves a transnational group of history and citizenship educators from EuroClio’s member Associations in France\, Germany\, Hungary\, Italy\, Macedonia\, Poland\, and Spain in the development and implementation of students-driven projects on censorship in Europe’s 20th century dictatorial and totalitarian regimes. The focus will be on the history of Franco’s Spain (1936 – 1975)\, Vichy France (1940 – 1945)\, Nazi Germany (1933-1945)\, Mussolini’s Italy (1922 – 1943)\, the post-1945 Hungarian ( – 1990) and Polish Republics (1944 – 1989) and the Republic of Macedonia as part of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia under Tito (1945 – 1980). During the project the team members will develop engaging and thought-provoking resources on striking historical examples of censorship with their students through the collection\, compilation and analysis of multi-perspective sources. Students with their teacher will then organise local public events such as exhibitions or debates to showcase the cases they researched in a way that questions the resonance of such history today. \n\n\n\n\n\n The team comes together in Skopje for an intensive final training.

SUMMARY:Sixth Annual Conference of the Historical Dialogues\, Justice and Memory Network
DESCRIPTION:The Historical Dialogues\, Justice and Memory Network is an organisation that provides a platform for researchers and activists working on issues of historical dialogue\, historical and transitional justice\, and public and social memory. From 1-3 December 2016 they will organise their Sixth Annual Conference: Confronting Violent Pasts and Historical (In)Justice. The NIOD\, Institute for War\, Holocaust and Genocide Studies will host the Conference in Amsterdam. Their Conference Theme aims to discuss what happens after the violence and the ad-hoc trials\, a phase in which we can begin to assess the impact on societies from which the perpetrators and/or victims emerged. Questions like: “Is there a right timing for addressing the violent past? Should and could historians and historical dialogue play a more instrumental role in these processes?”

SUMMARY:Annual Assembly of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum
DESCRIPTION:On 28-29 November Brussels will host the EaP CSF Annual Assembly for the first time in 7 years since the meeting that marked the beginning of the Forum’s work. The 8th Annual Assembly will be held under the title “Building a Common Secure and Democratic Future” and will bring together around 200 representatives of CSOs\, the EU Institutions and EaP governments for vibrant discussions at over 15 sessions. \nCommissioner Johannes Hahn\, along with the Co-Chairs of the EaP CSF Steering Committee\, Ulad Vialichka and Krzysztof Bobinski\, will deliver opening addresses to give start to the discussions of this years’ EaP CSF Annual Assembly. The opening ceremony will also feature the presentation of the EaP CSF Pavel Sheremet Award to the Crimean journalist Mykola Semena\, in recognition for his courage to risk his safety and freedom in the cause of the media freedom in Crimea. The event coincides with the International Women Human Rights Defender Day on 29 November. Every year this day is dedicated to honoring activism\, advocacy and courageous acts of resistance. \nThis year’s Annual Assembly will also include high-level panels which\, will focus on the role of the Eastern Neighbourhood in the EU policies\, whether as a reliable partner or a source of mounting concerns\, as well as on the status quo of the Eastern Partnership initiative prior the next EaP Summit. Throughout parallel panels the participants will debate on topics related to the EaP CSF priorities such as energy security\, youth development and transparency of EU funding in the region. During the event the EaP CSF members will present the projects and publications they have developed in the past year\, including the outputs of 18 re-granting projects. The best project ideas implemented in 2016 will receive the EaP CSF awards. The General Assembly\, the highest decision-making body of the EaP CSF\, will adopt resolutions on topics of major concern for the Forum\, which include the conditions for civil society in the EaP Countries\, as well as political situation in the region. The 8th EaP CSF Annual Assembly will end with the election of the new EaP CSF Steering Committee 2016-2017\, which will have a mandate from civil society of the EaP countries and EU member states to serve as the governing board of the Forum during a one-year term. \n

SUMMARY:First Planning Meeting Anna Lindh Foundation - Learning about (Y)our past in Nicosia\, Cyprus
DESCRIPTION:The project “Learning about (y)our past. History lessons for intercultural citizenship in the EuroMed region” aims to help young people in the Euro-Mediterranean region to acquire competences for intercultural citizenship by learning about identity and diversity\, about positive intercultural encounters and addressing emotive and controversial issues in history education. The project will achieve this through collaborative design\, piloting\, peer-review\, editing\, design and publication of six learning activities that can be used as alternative educational resources. The development of these resources will be done by an international team with various cultural and professional backgrounds. This team will meet three times throughout the project\, to work on the initial planning\, peer-review and final editing of the resources. In between meetings the project team will work on the collecting of source material and piloting of the resources in practice. The project meetings will take place in Cyprus and Lebanon. The learning activities will be translated and published in Arab\, English\, Greek and Turkish and made freely available for use on the website of EuroClio and licensed in such a way that reuse is possible. To ensure that the main relevant stakeholders are informed about the learning activities and encourage its widespread use the project team will develop and implement a communication plan targeting the professional community of history educators in the EuroMed.\n\n\n\n\n\nIn November 18-21\, the group will meet in Nicosia\, Cyprus with the aims of;\n\nProviding the project team with better understanding of project aims\, logic and outputs.\nIntroducing the project team to guidebook for history textbooks authors ”On a Common Path. New Approaches to Writing History Textbooks in Europe and the Arab and Islamic Worlds: The Case of the Mediterranean” and discuss possible thematic connections to the project.\nProviding a guidance on how to collect and work with sources in developing transnational educational resources.\nSharing initial ideas on the content\, topics of the educational resources.\nAgreeing on division of content amongst team members and common framework for the lessons and technical standards.\nAgreeing on the timeline of the actions to come after the planning meeting and choose a date for the next development meeting.

SUMMARY:3rd Team Meeting Decisions and Dilemmas 2 in Budapest\, Hungary
DESCRIPTION:The project Decisions and Dilemmas: Exploring European Union history through the lens of contemporary issues will result in a series of learning resources that are ready to use in history and citizenship classes at secondary school level across Europe. The focus will be on contemporary issues for the European Union\, related to economic imbalances; energy dependency; trade in a global context; the EU potential global power\, and opening Europe’s borders for people. \nEach issue will result in a learning activity based on active learning methods (such as scripted drama\, various forms of debate and discussion\, and project work) that are best suited to the nature of that particular issue. As a result the project will show various ways in with students can learn about the EU on an active and engaging way. These learning resources will be developed\, tested and implemented by an international group of experienced educators (who are currently teaching citizenship and/or history) with the support of Jean Monnet professors as academic advisors. SUMMARY:Workshop: Teaching about Perpetrators: Ethics\, Aesthetics\, Politics at Utrecht University
DESCRIPTION:The “Teaching about Perpetrators” workshop series aims to examine how our contradictory attitudes toward perpetrators in society and culture can in themselves be made the object of enquiry\, and explores the opportunities and challenges for teaching and learning about past atrocities through the figure of the perpetrator across disciplines. \nThis is the third workshop in the series\, organized in the context of the ongoing research project Faces of Evil: The Figure of the Perpetrator in Contemporary Memory Culture (supported by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research\, NWO). This time\, we will focus on the ethical\, aesthetic\, and political dimensions of the representation of perpetrators and the use of such representations in the classroom. What are the advantages and potential dangers of using self-representations\, for instance propaganda materials and videos disseminated across social media? How can the ethical\, aesthetic and political problems associated with these materials be made productive for educational purposes? What sorts of lessons can be learnt from studying perpetrator (self)representations and what are the problems and limitations associated with them in an educational setting? What about fictional representations? What role do empathy and identification\, disgust\, fascination\, and other strong affects play in pedagogy about perpetrators? Are we ‘allowed’ to feel empathy for perpetrators? Where is the line between understanding and forgiveness? What role does affect play in the politics of memory and memorialization with regard to the figure of the perpetrator? And\, conversely\, how can affect be integrated into the fostering of political awareness and engagement? \nThe workshop is open to scholars\, including advanced PhD students and early career academics\, educators\, and curators and will be concerned with pedagogical practices relating to the figure of the perpetrator at all educational levels. \nThe workshop will not take the form of panels and presentations\, but rather of a combination of seminar-style discussion sessions.

DESCRIPTION:ePACT is an initiative of two civil society organizations with a proven track record in the field of education. EuroClio –  and CDRSEE – Centre for Democracy and Reconciliation in South East Europe have worked for over 20 years in the region\, providing opportunities for regional cooperation and promoting innovative and responsible history education. The initiative seeks to build on these experiences by building sustainable partnerships in the region for systemic change in education. Practitioners and policy makers benefit from intensified relation and cooperation as it strengthens capacity for both reform and implementation. \nThe Needs Assessment will be rolled-out online. To prepare for this\, 6 national peer-training seminar in the 6 project countries (Albania\, Bosnia-Herzegovina\, Kosovo\, Montenegro\, Republic of Macedonia\, and Serbia) are organised. The main purpose is to communicate the main idea of the needs assessment study\, to determine the survey methodology and also to address core concerns. The seminars will put these civil society actors in the position to promote participation in the survey and to collect a representative number of respondents per participating country. \nNovember 4-6th\, one such event takes place in Ohrid\, Macedonia.
