DESCRIPTION:*THIS EVENT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED. \n  \nWe are happy to announce the call for the Podcasters Expert Training Workshop in The Hague\, the Netherlands. The training will take place from December 3 until  December 4 2024\, with December 2 as the day of early arrivals. We will share the programme and more details with the participants. \nAbout the Project \nIn partnership with Terraforming\, Intercultural Institute Timișoara\, and the Arolsen Archives\, EuroClio  is leading the project  Facts Not Fiction – Young Historians Show How to Learn from the Past. This project is addressed to history educators\, museum educators\, podcasters\, graphic novelists\, and other professionals in the field of memorialisation. The aim is to train students and youth groups to research local histories of persecution during the Nazi era and develop their own end products based on these findings. Among the students’ creations are a podcast\, a graphic novel\, a heritage tour and an exhibition. \n  \nWho are we looking for? \nFor this particular event\, we are looking for podcasters with a strong focus on history and history education. Those interested in the history of totalitarianism\, the Holocaust memorial\, and mid-20th century histories of migration and persecution should  definitely apply.  \nBy providing their expertise\, podcasters will be able to assist in students’ local history projects. Podcasters will be invited to work on the script of different animations that we are developing in order to show students how to make a podcast. \n  \nHow can you apply to join us? \nPlease send us a letter of motivation detailing your interest in the training\, including an explanation of relevant projects you have worked on. DESCRIPTION:SENSEI Conference on Inclusive Education \nWe are delighted to announce the Conference on Inclusive Education\, which will take place on 15-16 November 2024! \nAbout the Project  \nThe School EducatioN for Sustainable and Equal Inclusion [SENSEI] project seeks to create and deliver courses on inclusive education for both pre-service and in-service teachers\, by looking at current good practices in inclusion\, testing them in different contexts\, and integrating them with new approaches. \nThis includes best practices for the inclusion of students: \n\nWith special education needs\, including high-attaining students;\nwith a migrant background;\nthat are part of national\, cultural\, or religious minorities;\nfrom a different socioeconomic background;\nof students that are members of the LGBTQI+ community; and\nequitable representation of female students.\n\nWhat are we looking for? \nParticipants: Are you working in the field of education? Are you a practising teacher or still learning? Would you like to share or learn more about how to deliver content that caters to students/clients of diverse backgrounds? Even when it seems difficult to put so many diverse groups together\, or when there are systemic issues? Registrations are now closed. \nWorkshop hosts: Do you specialise in inclusive learning? Do you have expert knowledge about the inclusion of any of the above groups? Then perhaps you would like to share your knowledge. You don’t need to specifically work in education to submit a proposal\, only to work with participation/inclusion – but workshops are expected to include reflection on how your expertise can be applied in education. Registrations are now closed. \nTo apply\, participants and workshop hosts are required to have a working level of English proficiency. Moreover\, sessions should be interactive and utilise non-formal methods whilst avoiding frontal presentations. We can only sponsor participants from the following countries: Czech Republic\, Denmark\, Italy\, Netherlands\, Poland\, Portugal\, Romania\, Serbia\, and Spain. \nWhat do we offer? \nWe offer full financial sponsorship for selected participants and workshop hosts\, meaning that your travel\, stay\, food and accommodation will be covered for the duration of the event. DESCRIPTION:Register with Erasmus University Rotterdam\nMaking history concrete and close to one’s own experience: this is not always the strongest quality of our schoolbooks. On this special day\, we will share experiences from the Football Makes History programme on how teachers can use sport and sports stories to say something about the history of the 19th and 20th centuries and make it tangible and relevant for secondary school students of both lower and upper grades. This keeps the subject ‘close to the learner’ and allows for complexity and multi-perspectivity. \nProgramme highlights\nThe role of sport in society\nSport is not an island\, but a part of society. Developments in society have a major impact on how people can or want to do sport. Is sport part of a problem or is sport the solution? \nFootball and collective memory\nFrom its inception\, football has played a role in the formation of a collective memory\, fuelled by personal memories of and stories about iconic matches\, tournaments\, incidents and heroes. Moving and thought-provoking stories that\, put in a broader perspective\, can illustrate Europe’s history in a way different from the traditional ‘canon’. \nIconic football moments as teaching material\nMatches such as those during the 1914 ‘Christmas truce’ in the trenches\, the myth of the death match in 1942\, the 1974 World Cup with the ‘fratricidal struggle’ between the GDR and the GDR during the Cold War\, can be the starting point for lessons that make pupils think in an original way and contribute to their empathy and historical awareness. \nObjective & result\n\nLed by subject didactics and subject experts\, you work on designing concrete lessons about football as a starting point for lessons about history.\nYou learn more about iconic football moments and their broader 20th-century historical contexts.\nBased on this newly acquired knowledge\, you design individual lessons and lesson series on the 20th century and on historical thinking and reasoning\, using concrete and surprisingly appealing examples.

Why do we continue to discuss the legacies of the Nazi regime and their collaborators across Europe today? How can we equip young people to critically engage with the history of the Holocaust and combat misinformation about the Second World War and its legacy? \nIn partnership with Terraforming\, Intercultural Institute Timișoara\, and the Arolsen Archives\, EuroClio – European Association of History Educators is embarking the project\,  Facts Not Fiction – Young Historians Show How to Learn from the Past\, which aims to empower history educators\, museum educators\, and other professionals and institutions in the field of memorialization\, to train students and youth groups to research local histories of persecution during the Nazi era\, and develop their own graphic novels\, podcasts\, or guided tours based on these findings. Alongside museum educators\, Facts Not Fiction have hosted training events for archivists\, teachers and tour guides in addition to conducting workshops with students. Young people in several European countries will then have the chance to research specific local histories related to the Second World War and create their own end-products which may be a graphic novel\, podcast\, heritage tour or exhibition.  \nMuseum Educators and other professionals will have the chance to give feedback and guidance to students throughout the project and assist in students’ local exhibitions of their chosen microhistories.  \nWho are we looking for? \nFor this particular event\, we are looking for museum educators and other professionals interested in the Second World War and its incorporation into museum and gallery exhibitions. Those interested in the history of totalitarianism\, the Holocaust memorial\, and mid-20th century histories of migration and persecution should apply. While the project is primarily focused on the persecution carried out by the Nazis and their collaborators\, those with little/no background in the Second World War as well as those with experience in other related areas of history are also encouraged to submit an application. For example\, those who have worked on museums relating to the persecution of the Roma and Sinti or queer and disabled communities by authoritarian regimes. If your professional experience is in a period/ location that is more distinct\, but you still feel that it explores related themes\, please elaborate in your application.  \nThe training will take place in The Hague on September 29 to October 1 with September 29 as the day of arrival for international participants.  \nHow can you apply to join us? \nThe application period will open from mid-August. Please send us a letter of motivation detailing your interest in the project\, including an explanation of relevant archives and/ or source materials you have worked with. SUMMARY:Webinar: The Experience of Women and Children During Wartime
DESCRIPTION:This panel discussion will help us reflect on the experience of women and children during wartime in Europe\, in particular during the Spanish Civil War\, the Second World War\, and the 1990s wars in the Western Balkans. \nAccompanied by our experts\, we will tackle three main guiding questions: \n\nwhat do we know about the experience of women and children during the war?\nwhere is our information about this coming from? where can we integrate this information with new sources?\nhow does the experience of women and children during wartime influence the conversations about the past and the present that we have today?\n\nThe questions will allow us to journey into our shared European past\, to reflect on topics of trauma\, survival\, activism\, and remembrance\, and to create meaningful connections between the stories we tell about the past and our collective behavior as a society today. \nThis webinar follows the session on the Use of Video Testimonies in the classroom\, and takes place within the framework of our partner project Rememchild on 08 June 2023 at 16:30 CEST. \nOur panelists\nAndrea Pető is Professor in the Department of Gender Studies at Central European University\, Vienna Austria\, where she teaches courses on European comparative social and gender history\, gender and politics\, women’s movements\, qualitative methods\, oral history\, and the Holocaust. She was one of the editors and external reviewers of our toolkit on Who Were the Victims of the National Socialists\, and will be bringing in the perspective of the experience of women and children during WW2. You can access a detail biography of Andrea Pető here. \nDunia Etura is a Professor in the field of Journalism and a specialist in Gender Studies and Equality Policy Management at the University of Valladolid and the Millán Santos Permanent University. Among other roles\, she is a member of the Gender Studies Chair of UVa\, which investigates on gender equality and violence\, inclusion of feminism in television in Spain\, narrative in television series. She will help us navigate the experience of women and children during and after the Spanish Civil War. She holds MA and MPhil in medieval studies from Central European University (Budapest). From 2001 she works at the History Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina\, from 2013 holding the position of the museum director. She is actively promoting the museum as a place of constructive dialogue and dealing with the past. She is a member of the National Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina for Cooperation with UNESCO and member of the steering board of the Balkan Museum Network. SUMMARY:Bringing Digitised Heritage Closer to the Classroom
DESCRIPTION:An in person train the trainer and networking event \nEuroClio is proud to launch our first ever cross-sectoral networking and train the trainer event\, which will take place in The Hague on 3 and 4 March 2023. The event will bring together practising teachers and cultural heritage professionals\, to discuss the potential of digitised collections and their use in the classroom. We are looking for up to 7 Cultural Heritage Professionals and 3 teachers who wish to join us at the event!  \nAbout the event\nIn the past few years\, we have had the chance to meet with many teachers and cultural heritage professionals and reflect on how can we best tap into the educational potential of GLAM collections\, bringing them closer to the classroom. This is what we have learned (summarised to its core): \n\n\n\nTeachers are always searching for the perfect primary source that will help their students engage meaningfully with history\, and find most of these sources in digitised cultural heritage collections\, including via Historiana and Europeana;\nCultural heritage institutes wish to better understand what is the educational value of their collections\, and to bring it closer to teachers in a way that is easy to use.\n\n\n\nBuilding on this awareness\, and on the success of our first co-creation meetings with the Photoconsortium\, we have decided to launch a training and networking event where we will bring together teachers and cultural heritage professionals to mine existing GLAM collections\, creating high quality eLearning Activities and curated collections of primary sources that will be ready to be used in the classroom. \nThe Programme\nThe training will be hosted by Historiana Team Members Helen Snelson\, Bridget Martin\, and Francesco Scatigna\, and will include: \n\n\n\nSharing sessions\, in which participants will explore their needs and wishes when it comes to accessing and creating quality digital  learning materials\nActive workshops on how to create an eLearning Activity on Historiana and on what makes a high quality Source Collection\nCo-design sessions where teachers and cultural heritage professionals\, together\, will develop eLearning Activities and Source Collections using primary sources available in Europeana Collections or on already existing Historiana Partner Pages.\n\n\n\nConcrete results\nConcretely\, the training will result in: \n\n\n\nA new (draft) Historiana partner page with at least one eLearning Activity and Source Collection\, for all those participants who are new to the platform;\nAt least one new Source Collection and two new eLearning Activities\, for all those participants who already have a partner page on Historiana.\n\n\n\nConcept NoteTechnical information\n The Hague\, The Netherlands \n 3 and 4 March 2023 \nAll costs for participation will be covered by EuroClio \nWho can participate?\nWe expect to welcome up to 7 cultural heritage professionals and 3 teachers from all across Europe. SUMMARY:Engaging Educators to Use Online Tools: Online Self-Paced Course
DESCRIPTION:About the Course\nIn a world that revolves increasingly around competencies in media literacy\, educators need to be prepared to teach online creatively to supplement what they do in class.This online self-paced course will assist educators to create and share e-Learning Activities on Historiana. These activities are online tools that have been developed to allow students to improve their historical thinking skills in a variety of ways. The course’s goal is that participants will be challenged to create their own e-Learning Activities. \nThrough this course participants will: \n\nlearn what Historiana is\, how to add sources\, how to use the builder\, how to share e-Learning Activities\, and how to review answers.  The trainers will model how to use and make e-Learning Activities (creating a topic\, developing an inquiry question\, selecting sources\, choosing challenging tools\, designing instruction\, and evaluating the activities)\,\nimprove their digital competence with these online tools\, which they can now use more easily with their students\, and\ncreate e-Learning Activities that promote quality history or citizenship education on Historiana and to do so independently by the end of the course.\n\nNo previous experience with Historiana is needed to join the course! \nProgramme\nDuring the course\, participants will join a few live sessions to be introduced to the course\, share their work\, and receive feedback and tips. In-between these session\, participants will be able to work on the modules in their own time in a set time frame. He taught History and Latin from 2002-2011 at several high schools in the Netherlands. From 2009 onwards he has been a teacher trainer for the school subjects of History and Religious Education\, first at Fontys University of Applied Sciences\, later also at Amsterdam University. He is also an active member of the Dutch History Teachers Association. Since 2018 he has been an active member of the Historiana Teaching and Learning Team\, developing learning activities and providing training. He is currently doing a PhD on sensitive histories combining insights from both history and religious education didactics. He is also developing a study program (minor) on heritage and heritage education. He lives in Tilburg (the Netherlands). \nJames A. Diskant\, Ph.D.\, a Historian of modern German labor history\, is a retired high school history and government teacher. From 2001 to 2017 he taught at the John D. O’Bryant School of Mathematics and Science in Boston\, Massachusetts\, where he taught courses in world and big history\, as well as in government and in research methods. The author of student-based curricula\, he was an active member of history and pedagogical associations based in the United States\, including the World History Association and the National Council for the Studies\, where he also facilitated workshops. He currently lives in Berlin\, Germany; since January 2020 has been an active member of EuroClio’s Education and Learning Team. In that capacity\, he has written and edited numerous E-Learning Activities\, facilitated workshops\, and taught courses. SUMMARY:FC EuroClio - Local stories to tackle big events
DESCRIPTION:Sharing Session facilitated by EuroClio\n\nHow can we use the life stories of football\, tennis\, volleyball players\, authors\, painters\, singers\, and other individuals to help our students reflect on issues of inclusion\, exclusion\, and discrimination? What is the connection between a small and local history\, and big world events? How do the life stories of people intertwine with social\, cultural\, economic and political histories? \nIn this session\, EuroClio Ambassador and member of the Football Makes History team Chris Rowe will walk us through the process that led him to the development of 100+ Football Life Stories (all available on the website footballmakeshistory.eu). How did he select which stories to include? How do the “Thinking Points” come to be? How does he see these life stories enter the classroom? \nAfter a short presentation\, we will put his idea to the test: divided in smaller groups\, we will add some life stories to the collection. These life stories can be linked to football\, but they can also connect to other artists\, athletes\, or any other individuals. SUMMARY:FC EuroClio - Football Meets Society: towards inclusive history education?
DESCRIPTION:Panel Discussion with Dr. Kevin Moore\, Petra Landers\, and Prof. Dr. Gijsbert Oonk.\n\nFootball – and sport in general – promotes sportsmanship\, a healthy lifestyle and team spirit. Nevertheless\, this much-vaunted “power of sport” also has a downside\, from which the sport prefers to turn away: violence\, racism\, sexual harassment\, doping\, match fixing and subversion. Viewed in this way\, sport is a mirror of society. Nonetheless it is this mirror that many youngsters easily can relate to. They share – together with educators\, trainers and coaches – a strong passion for the game. Often\, they play themselves\, they have their favorite national and international clubs and they follow the results almost daily. They know football stories. \nTo which extent can we use the passion of the game in our (history) teaching and citizenship training to tell stories of equality and inequality\, racism\, patriotism\, gender\, migration and diversity? \nWe have invited journalists\, representatives of football clubs\, heritage organization teachers and fans to discuss the options and limits of sport and sport- stories as an educational tool. A tool that can used in formal teaching\, civic trainings\, in club museums and indeed on a grass-root level at the local clubs. \nThe overall aim of the Football Makes History project is to contribute to the reduction of the number of people at risk of social exclusion across Europe by pursuing these specific objectives: \n\npromote diversity\, non-discrimination and equality\, including gender equality;\nInnovate formal and non-formal learning leading to social\, civic and intercultural competences and critical thinking;\nsupport the professional development of educators and youth workers and build the capacity to develop and implement innovative teaching methods;\nengage cultural heritage for all by accessing the histories\, memories and legacies residing in football history in transnational perspectives on all levels;\nraise public awareness on the role of learning for social inclusion and increase the sharing of innovative practices across the continent.\n\nWhere do we succeed? What are the limits and possibilities of this approach? To what extent should clubs make use of such approaches? \n\n\nMeet our speakers\n\nKevin Moore\, Football and sports historian\, author\, academic. \nKevin Moore grew up in Nantwich\, Cheshire\, in the UK\, an historic market town\, which gave him a strong interest in history. He was introduced by his family to football\, cricket\, pop music and film as a child and these remain great passions in his life! He is a fan of sport in general and is fascinated by the huge variety of sports we have around the world\, ancient and modern. Kevin studied history as an undergraduate and postgraduate at the University of Liverpool. He has been a Lecturer in History in Liverpool\, and between 1992 and 1997 he was a Lecturer in Museum Studies at the University of Leicester\, the world’s leading centre of its kind for postgraduate teaching and research. Kevin has over 20 years’ experience as a CEO\, including being the Founding Director (CEO) of the National Football Museum for England and the first CEO of a major statutory body. \n  \nPetra Landers\, footballer\, coach\, mentor. \nPetra Landers is a four time German champion\, as well as winner of the 1989 European Cup with the German National Team. When in 1981 Germany was invited to send a team to Taiwan\, to play in an unofficial world championship\, her club (Bergisch Gladbach) was chosen to represent Germany. In 1982\, she became member of the first ever German women’s national football team. After having contributed to the rise of women’s football in Germany and a 9 years pause from the game\, she became coach and mentor of a group of girls in Lusaka in Zambia. In 2017\, she played in the “Equal Playing Field” match\, 5715m high on Mount Kilimanjaro. \n  \nThis session will be moderated by Prof. Dr. Gijsbert Oonk\, who  holds the Jean Monnet Chair (ad Personam): Europe in Globalizing World: Migration\, Citizenship and Identity. This chair promotes education and research in the field of Global History\, European Studies and National Identity. The Jean Monnet chairs are an initiative of the European Commission to promote education\, research and reflection in the field of European integration studies at higher education institutions. Oonk is the founding director of the Sport and Nation research program at Erasmus University Rotterdam. This interdisciplinary research program focuses on talented athletes with a migrant background within football and the Olympic Games in the context of changing citizenship\, multiple citizenship and elite migration. SUMMARY:First short-term joint staff training for the Football Makes History project
DESCRIPTION:The first 3-day thematic workshop within the Football Makes History project will take place from 1-3 February in Rotterdam\, the Netherlands. The central theme of the workshop will be discrimination and anti-semitism. The Anne Frank House will be the workshops’ host\, regarding its unique position in the world as a place of memory and responsibility to prevent discrimination world-wide. The programme of the workshop will include interesting presentations by experts on discrimination\, insight into the Anne Frank House’s FanCoach project and group sessions on the development of educational material using football as a door opener to address issues of discrimination.

SUMMARY:Train the Trainer Event for Decisions and Dilemmas III
DESCRIPTION:From 9-11 February this year\, the EuroClio project Decisions & Dilemmas III will officially launch with a “train the trainer” event at the House of European History in Brussels. This project is a continuation of the previous projects Decisions and Dilemmas I and II\, and aims to further support educators across Europe in teaching about the European Union in a motivational and meaningful way that resonates with students. The event in Brussels will kick-start this process by introducing the educational resources which were created over the course of the project’s predecessors and showcasing how they might be used. SUMMARY:Learning a History that is not yet History Author's meeting in Bosnia
DESCRIPTION:This week\, from 17-19 November\, authors involved in the EuroClio project “Learning a History that is not yet History” will meet in Mostar to discuss and strategise the implementation of the project’s final tasks. \nThe project deals with questions of teaching recent and fragmented histories that are remembered in a variety of disparate ways. Taking the case of the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s\, it aims to contribute to the field of European remembrance through raising awareness among teachers\, students and pupils of ways to establish common approaches to a difficult past. As the project enters its final stages\, the meeting will involve finalizing its outcomes with the local partners involved.

SUMMARY:"Learning Local Football Histories: A Tool for Social Inclusion?" Seminar in Rotterdam
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday – 21 October – EuroClio will host a seminar at Erasmus University Rotterdam as part of the ongoing project\, “Football. A People’s History of Europe”\, which takes the history of football as a lens through which to explore wider historical themes in an accessible manner. The seminar is part of the Football People action weeks\, funded by the FARE Network and participants will have the opportunity to share experiences of using football to teach history and explore possibilities for closer cooperation building on existing initiatives. \nThe aim of the seminar is to present EuroClio’s common framework for creating educational resources that relate to local football history\, as well as the existing practices which harness the unique potential of football history to reach out to young learners. It will feature a group of professionals from relevant fields\, including history teachers\, sports journalists\, and football historians\, thus creating a diverse and active network that can further develop the intermingling of local football history and history education beyond the event.

SUMMARY:Europeana DSI-3 Kick-off Meeting
DESCRIPTION:EuroClio will be represented by Steven Stegers and Jaco Stoop at the kick-off meeting for the latest collaboration with Europeana – DSI-3. The project will continue the work of its predecessors DSI-1 and DSI-2 in tackling the question of “how to unlock the potential for use of digital heritage for (history) education?”. Within this\, there will be a focus on web development and the further integration of Europeana and Historiana in order to make them more user-friendly\, thus allowing for their optimal use in history education. The project will aim to develop teaching resources across the two platforms\, as well as teacher training guides on the use of these platforms and resources. \nThe purpose of the meeting – which will take place from October 16-17 in Egmond aan Zee in the North of the Netherlands – is to discuss what is expected of the project\, and how the involved partners will work together during its execution.
