SUMMARY:Annual Conference National Agency Education for Europe in Potsdam
DESCRIPTION:The Annual Conference brings together up to 500 Erasmus +beneficiaries as well as stakeholders from adult education and vocational education and training. Multiple speakers shall present different scenarios for the future of Europe (based on the NECE video “Europe 2030”) and discuss the potential implications for citizenship education in the adult- and vocational education sector. \nThe participants will discuss the frame topic “the future of education – education in the future” in five workshops. One of the workshops will be dedicated to citizenship education\, which is one of the priorities of the Erasmus+ programme. The workshop targets representatives of adult education organisations and institutions of vocational education and training who are implementing (or are planning to organise) citizenship education projects. DESCRIPTION:History Education In A Changing World:  The Past As A Tool For The Future \nHistory Education is political education. As such it is central to the development of children’s sense of identity\, consciousness and citizenship. Countries and communities use their frequently competing nationalistic master and other minor narratives\, drawn from a canon of historical consciousness\, memories\, myths\, legends\, narratives\, stories and accounts to promote\, sustain and support dogmatic positions and beliefs. All too often these result in civil conflict\, civil war\, genocide\, terrorism and international armed conflict. \nThe challenge to History Education is that\, while teaching master and minor narratives\, to develop pupils’ historical thinking as an antidote to closed-mind xenophobia and jingoistic nationalism. Teaching about ‘The Past As A Tool For The Future’ centres on History Education’s research based values\, beliefs\, policies\, curricula and pedagogy/didactics that reflect the open-minded skills\, processes\, procedures and disciplinary concepts [second order] of history as a disputatious\, debated and contested enquiry rooted in primary and secondary sources. \nThe History Educators International Research Network (HEIRNET) brings together colleagues from around the world interested in History’s educational\, moral\, social\, political and citizenship role. SUMMARY:International Georg Arnhold Summer School
DESCRIPTION:In July the Georg Eckert Institute and Teachers College of Columbia University are organising the third Georg Arnhold International Summer School. This year they will explore the theories and practices of human rights education (HRE) at the secondary school level. The Summer School will look back at the evolution of HRE aims and approaches as they pertain to secondary school environments\, with discussions on critical approaches and pedagogies\, curriculum policies\, teaching and learning resources\, educator preparation\, non-formal programming in schools\, and evidence of impact. The Summer School invites participants to “look forward” on topics such as the place of HRE within a larger critique of the human rights framework\, the roles of state and non-state actors in delivering HRE\, and the challenges and potentialities offered by the use of traditional and nontraditional educational media and curricula. The Georg Arnhold Program has a special interest in post-conflict and transitional societies\, though proposals for other contexts will also be considered. \n

DESCRIPTION:The Presence of the Holocaust in society\, politics and culture\, c.1970 – 2015 \nThe UCL Centre for Holocaust Education is hosting the annual British Association of Holocaust Studies (BAHS) conference. The conference will focus on the ‘Presence of the Holocaust’ in society\, politics and culture since 1970 and explore the growth and development of Holocaust history and memory over the past four decades. \nThe conference is specifically concerned with how the collective conception of the Holocaust has developed since the mid to late 1970s. Ours is the generation in which Holocaust memory has grown exponentially\, expanding and extending at such a rate that it not only permeates Western culture and society\, but now has global proportions. Nor is there any indication of this slowing down; increased concern at the passing of survivors has given but further impetus to attempts to teach\, learn\, and remember the Holocaust\, whilst its continued representation raises ongoing interest in its abstraction and appropriation.

SUMMARY:European Remembrance Symposium
DESCRIPTION:This year the European Network Remembrance and Solidarity (ENRS) will organise a Remembrance Symposium in Budapest. After Stalin’s death in 1953 the Soviet Union starting shaking more and more\, a series of events showed how much people in many satellite states wanted to overthrow the communist dictatorships. These events climaxed in Budapest on 23 October 1956 with the first armed battle against Soviet troops and communist leadership. 2016  marks the 60th anniversary of this event. To commemorate the Eastern Europeans’ struggle for independence\, the European Network of Remembrance and Solidarity and its partners\, the Hungarian Committee of National Remembrance and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences have decided to dedicate the next European Remembrance Symposium\, which will take place in May 2016 in Budapest\, to the events of 1956 and their legacy. \nFor more information and the full Programme please visit their website.

SUMMARY:European Remembrance Symposium: 2016 Budapest
DESCRIPTION:The year 1956 was a year that “shook the world”. The events of 1956 showed how much people of Eastern Europe wanted to overthrow the communist dictatorships. After Stalin’s death in 1953\, the crisis within the Eastern Bloc became imminent. After the uprisings in Berlin and Poznań events reached their climax on October 23\, 1956 in Budapest\, with the first armed battle against Soviet troops and communist leadership. This confrontation had an impact on the history of the whole Eastern bloc and became a benchmark for other movements in countries under Soviet dominance striving for self-determination and freedom and. It also anticipated the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989 and its legacy is present in contemporary memory in Europe and beyond. \nNext year marks the 60th anniversary of these events. To commemorate the Eastern Europeans’ struggle for independence\, the European Network of Remembrance and Solidarity and its partners\, the Hungarian Committee of National Remembrance and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences have decided to dedicate the next European Remembrance Symposium\, which will take place in May 2016 in Budapest\, to the events of 1956 and their legacy. \nThe European Remembrance Symposium is intended to serve as a platform for high-level discussions by government representatives\, academics\, and professionals from both NGOs and public institutions which are active in the field of remembrance in Europe\, dedicated to regional and global remembrance\, and willing to meet contemporary challenges in historical education and memory. \nParticipants will be confronted with the questions of what Stalinism and De-Stalinization in Eastern Europe was like and why these periods differed so much from country to country. Much attention will be given to the description of societies in Eastern Europe under communist rule and the techniques that communist regimes used for handling crises in their countries (including international comparisons\, e.g. the ‘successful’ – from a communist point-of-view – crisis management in Poland compared to the 1956 revolution in Hungary). The impact of Stalinism on everyday social life will also be debated. \nIt will also be important to examine the processes that led to 1956 on a regional level: Stalin’s death in 1953\, the Uprising in Plzeň\, the East German uprising\, the 20th congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union\, and the events in Poznań\, Warsaw and Budapest. Both regional (Eastern European) and global aspects of 1956 will be put in the spotlight. Although the significance of 1956 is widely acknowledged as a turning point of Eastern European history\, its global impact continues to be a controversial issue among historians. The Symposium will be an opportunity to discuss the global framework of 1956 and the relation of the 1956 events to other forms of struggle between the Eastern and Western Blocs\, like the Suez Canal crisis or the situation in the Far East and Africa. \nAnother key issue of the discussions will be the comparison between 1956’s short-term and long-term impacts and the analysis of 1956’s effects on Western Europe; how was the thaw and its consequences perceived in Western Europe? What kind of communication and reciprocal influence\, existed between “East” and “West”? In particular\, participants will consider U.S. foreign policy\, Western communist parties\, the effects and the perception of dissidents and emigrants from East Central Europe\, and finally the Holy See’s Eastern Bloc policy. \nThe Symposium will allow participants to investigate the direct and indirect consequences of 1956\, including retribution\, emigration\, and various forms of repression. Both short- and long-term impacts will be discussed\, including the post-1956 “refining” of communist dominance. This may encompass methods that rulers used to enforce power and to mobilize the people for an ostensibly better future as well as to ensure popular obedience\, such as threats of Soviet invasion\, law as a tool of subordination\, and the surveillance of religious groups and institutions. \nThe contemporary meaning and the legacy of 1956 will also be given much attention. Participants will analyse 1956’s influence on present-day art\, literature\, film\, political culture and historical memory. \nFinally\, a frequently debated topic is how European societies come to terms with totalitarianism/ authoritarianism\, communist crimes\, and how images of freedom tend to differ by country. The organizers would like to give participants an opportunity to discuss the differences in perception of freedom between countries of Eastern and Western Europe\, as well as to weigh the accomplishments of various institutions and NGOs which try to keep the memory of the struggle for freedom alive. \nThe Symposium is one of the principal projects of the European Network Remembrance and Solidarity\, which aims to research\, document\, and promote the remembrance and the study of totalitarianisms\, dictatorships\, and wars in 20th century Europe through the inclusion of the most recent academic discourse and multilateral dialogue concerning the different experiences of the past era.

SUMMARY:European Historical Forum: What brings us together\, what separates us?
DESCRIPTION:The Heinrich Böll Foundation (Heinrich Böll Stiftung) together with Memorial (Moskou) are organising another European Historical Forum. This year the Forum will evolve around the theme: What brings us together\, what separates us? European memories about fleeing and expulsion in the 20th century. Considering the current refugee crisis a very relevant and interesting theme. So far a number of interesting speakers will be attending the Conference including: Aleida Assmann (Universität Konstanz)\, Irina Sherbakova (Memorial\, Moskou)\, Gulnara Bekirowa (Political Scientist\, TV-producer\, Kiev) and Stefan Troebst (Universität Leipzig). \nThe Forum will address three main questions: \n\nHow can memory allowed and simultaneously conciliation promote – what will be remembered and what not?\nWhat have been the political and legal approaches in recent decades to deal with suffered injustice\, to bring compensation for losses and to make the necessary adjustments for the new reality today?\nWhich new (historical) identities occur in the target countries (Zielländern): what history and what historical lessons connect people\, whether they are fleeing\, displaced or home?\n\nThe language of the Conference will be German\, English and Russian. \nMore information will follow soon on their website.
