SUMMARY:Seminar: Truth\, Justice\, and Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:EuroClio partner the Robert Bosch Stiftung (RBS) are hosting a seminar in Berlin this week within the context of their ongoing project\, “Truth\, Justice\, and Remembrance“. The project and seminar deal with issues of remembrance in conflict and post-conflict societies\, addressing the fact that the way  such societies remember conflict and tension from the past can impact the possibilities for maintaining peace in the present. The way in which people internalize and reproduce certain divisive narratives can hinder attempts at reconciliation\, and the seminar intends to draw attention to the work of those that seek to challenge such interpretations of the past by advocating for a peaceful and inclusive culture of remembrance. In turn\, the seminar aims to encourage international exchange of these attitudes and practices.

SUMMARY:Seminar on "The Role of NGOs in Remembrance of the Holocaust"
DESCRIPTION:The Council of Europe – within the context of the program “Remembrance of the Holocaust and Prevention of Crimes Against Humanity” –  has organised a seminar along with the Polish Ministry of Education\, the Krakow pedagogical University and the Auschwitz-Birkenau International Centre which looks at “the Role of NGOs in the Remembrance of the Holocaust“. \nThe event will explore the responsibility of the NGO community to ensure public memory of the Holocaust is kept alive in the absence of those who witnessed it directly. It aims to promote educational practices which target the remembrance of the Holocaust and the prevention of crimes against humanity\, and will look more generally at the role of NGOs in facilitating the trans-generational transmission of memory.

SUMMARY:Historical Thinking Summer Institute
DESCRIPTION:From 17 to 22 July 2017\, the Historical Thinking Summer Institute will take place at the Canadian War Museum / Canadian Museum of History in Ottawa\, Canada. \nThe Historical Thinking Summer Institute is designed for teachers\, curriculum developers\, professional development leaders\, historians\, museum educators and curators who want to enhance their expertise at designing history programs\, courses\, units\, lessons\, projects\, or educational resources that explicitly focus on historical thinking. Historical thinking is now a foundation for history and social studies curricula across the country and internationally\, and museum and heritage educators are similarly embracing it. \nAttendees of the 2017 Historical Thinking Summer Institute will participate in a variety of activities including presentations and workshops\, learning activities in the exhibitions at the Canadian Museum of History and the Canadian Ware Museum\, discussions of readings\, guest lectures\, and group work to explore six historical thinking concepts: evidence\, significance\, continuity & change\, cause & consequence\, perspective-taking\, and the ethical dimension of history. \nThese concepts will shape our exploration of the substantive theme of this year’s institute “Thinking Historically about Canada 150.” July 1\, 2017 marks the 150th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation\, an event that is not without controversy for many people in Canada. SUMMARY:Meaning\, Thinking and Learning in History Conference in Jyväskylä\, Finland
DESCRIPTION:Meaning\, Thinking and Learning in History seeks to strengthen research on history pedagogy by furthering cooperation between history education practice and research. History as both a discipline and school subject is in motion\, receiving increasing demands from the surrounding society. Focusing on textbook-driven narratives is usually not enough to meet the demands of the curricula or of students. The primary goal of this conference is to encourage collaboration and foster dialogue between professional historians\, education scholars\, graduate students\, and classroom teachers in order to find ways of balancing the scholarship on the pedagogy of history with increasing demands and classroom realities. \nOver the course of this two-day conference\, scholars\, teachers and practitioners will share their research findings\, offering examples of cutting-edge approaches and engaging in dynamic discussions that will help nurture intercultural dialogue and bridge scholarly and practical questions. Keynote lectures will be given by Bob Bain (University of Michigan) and Henrik Meinander (University of Helsinki). \nThe conference invites proposals for presentations\, panels and workshops by 15 January\, 2017. To learn more visit the teho2017en.wordpress.com and in twitter #teho2017. \nThe conference is bilingual\, in English and Finnish. SUMMARY:Sixth Annual Conference of the Historical Dialogues\, Justice and Memory Network
DESCRIPTION:The Historical Dialogues\, Justice and Memory Network is an organisation that provides a platform for researchers and activists working on issues of historical dialogue\, historical and transitional justice\, and public and social memory. From 1-3 December 2016 they will organise their Sixth Annual Conference: Confronting Violent Pasts and Historical (In)Justice. The NIOD\, Institute for War\, Holocaust and Genocide Studies will host the Conference in Amsterdam. Their Conference Theme aims to discuss what happens after the violence and the ad-hoc trials\, a phase in which we can begin to assess the impact on societies from which the perpetrators and/or victims emerged. Questions like: “Is there a right timing for addressing the violent past? Should and could historians and historical dialogue play a more instrumental role in these processes?”

SUMMARY:Annual Assembly of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum
DESCRIPTION:On 28-29 November Brussels will host the EaP CSF Annual Assembly for the first time in 7 years since the meeting that marked the beginning of the Forum’s work. The 8th Annual Assembly will be held under the title “Building a Common Secure and Democratic Future” and will bring together around 200 representatives of CSOs\, the EU Institutions and EaP governments for vibrant discussions at over 15 sessions. \nCommissioner Johannes Hahn\, along with the Co-Chairs of the EaP CSF Steering Committee\, Ulad Vialichka and Krzysztof Bobinski\, will deliver opening addresses to give start to the discussions of this years’ EaP CSF Annual Assembly. The opening ceremony will also feature the presentation of the EaP CSF Pavel Sheremet Award to the Crimean journalist Mykola Semena\, in recognition for his courage to risk his safety and freedom in the cause of the media freedom in Crimea. The event coincides with the International Women Human Rights Defender Day on 29 November. Every year this day is dedicated to honoring activism\, advocacy and courageous acts of resistance. \nThis year’s Annual Assembly will also include high-level panels which\, will focus on the role of the Eastern Neighbourhood in the EU policies\, whether as a reliable partner or a source of mounting concerns\, as well as on the status quo of the Eastern Partnership initiative prior the next EaP Summit. Throughout parallel panels the participants will debate on topics related to the EaP CSF priorities such as energy security\, youth development and transparency of EU funding in the region. During the event the EaP CSF members will present the projects and publications they have developed in the past year\, including the outputs of 18 re-granting projects. The best project ideas implemented in 2016 will receive the EaP CSF awards. The General Assembly\, the highest decision-making body of the EaP CSF\, will adopt resolutions on topics of major concern for the Forum\, which include the conditions for civil society in the EaP Countries\, as well as political situation in the region. The 8th EaP CSF Annual Assembly will end with the election of the new EaP CSF Steering Committee 2016-2017\, which will have a mandate from civil society of the EaP countries and EU member states to serve as the governing board of the Forum during a one-year term. \n

SUMMARY:CDRSEE Joint History Project Launch
DESCRIPTION:The Joint History Project was the original CDRSEE programme and remains at the heart of everything we do. The JHP was launched in 1999\, in an effort to change the way history is taught in schools across the Balkans. The founders – historians\, diplomats\, philanthropists — felt very strongly that to reach real reconciliation in the region\, you have to reach the grass roots\, the youth. DESCRIPTION:The “Teaching about Perpetrators” workshop series aims to examine how our contradictory attitudes toward perpetrators in society and culture can in themselves be made the object of enquiry\, and explores the opportunities and challenges for teaching and learning about past atrocities through the figure of the perpetrator across disciplines. \nThis is the third workshop in the series\, organized in the context of the ongoing research project Faces of Evil: The Figure of the Perpetrator in Contemporary Memory Culture (supported by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research\, NWO). This time\, we will focus on the ethical\, aesthetic\, and political dimensions of the representation of perpetrators and the use of such representations in the classroom. What are the advantages and potential dangers of using self-representations\, for instance propaganda materials and videos disseminated across social media? How can the ethical\, aesthetic and political problems associated with these materials be made productive for educational purposes? What sorts of lessons can be learnt from studying perpetrator (self)representations and what are the problems and limitations associated with them in an educational setting? What about fictional representations? What role do empathy and identification\, disgust\, fascination\, and other strong affects play in pedagogy about perpetrators? Are we ‘allowed’ to feel empathy for perpetrators? Where is the line between understanding and forgiveness? What role does affect play in the politics of memory and memorialization with regard to the figure of the perpetrator? And\, conversely\, how can affect be integrated into the fostering of political awareness and engagement? \nThe workshop is open to scholars\, including advanced PhD students and early career academics\, educators\, and curators and will be concerned with pedagogical practices relating to the figure of the perpetrator at all educational levels. \nThe workshop will not take the form of panels and presentations\, but rather of a combination of seminar-style discussion sessions.

As such it is central to the development of children’s sense of identity\, consciousness and citizenship. Countries and communities use their frequently competing nationalistic master and other minor narratives\, drawn from a canon of historical consciousness\, memories\, myths\, legends\, narratives\, stories and accounts to promote\, sustain and support dogmatic positions and beliefs. All too often these result in civil conflict\, civil war\, genocide\, terrorism and international armed conflict. \nThe challenge to History Education is that\, while teaching master and minor narratives\, to develop pupils’ historical thinking as an antidote to closed-mind xenophobia and jingoistic nationalism. Teaching about ‘The Past As A Tool For The Future’ centres on History Education’s research based values\, beliefs\, policies\, curricula and pedagogy/didactics that reflect the open-minded skills\, processes\, procedures and disciplinary concepts [second order] of history as a disputatious\, debated and contested enquiry rooted in primary and secondary sources. \nThe History Educators International Research Network (HEIRNET) brings together colleagues from around the world interested in History’s educational\, moral\, social\, political and citizenship role. SUMMARY:International Georg Arnhold Summer School
DESCRIPTION:In July the Georg Eckert Institute and Teachers College of Columbia University are organising the third Georg Arnhold International Summer School. This year they will explore the theories and practices of human rights education (HRE) at the secondary school level. The Summer School will look back at the evolution of HRE aims and approaches as they pertain to secondary school environments\, with discussions on critical approaches and pedagogies\, curriculum policies\, teaching and learning resources\, educator preparation\, non-formal programming in schools\, and evidence of impact. The Summer School invites participants to “look forward” on topics such as the place of HRE within a larger critique of the human rights framework\, the roles of state and non-state actors in delivering HRE\, and the challenges and potentialities offered by the use of traditional and nontraditional educational media and curricula. The Georg Arnhold Program has a special interest in post-conflict and transitional societies\, though proposals for other contexts will also be considered. \n

DESCRIPTION:The Presence of the Holocaust in society\, politics and culture\, c.1970 – 2015 \nThe UCL Centre for Holocaust Education is hosting the annual British Association of Holocaust Studies (BAHS) conference. The conference will focus on the ‘Presence of the Holocaust’ in society\, politics and culture since 1970 and explore the growth and development of Holocaust history and memory over the past four decades. \nThe conference is specifically concerned with how the collective conception of the Holocaust has developed since the mid to late 1970s. Ours is the generation in which Holocaust memory has grown exponentially\, expanding and extending at such a rate that it not only permeates Western culture and society\, but now has global proportions. Nor is there any indication of this slowing down; increased concern at the passing of survivors has given but further impetus to attempts to teach\, learn\, and remember the Holocaust\, whilst its continued representation raises ongoing interest in its abstraction and appropriation.
