SUMMARY:International Symposium - Untold Histories: Sinti and Roma in Our Classrooms
DESCRIPTION:Co-hosted by EuroClio and department Social Work of The Hague University of Applied Sciences (THUAS)\, this event will bring together teachers\, educators\, policymakers\, community members and students to explore approaches in educating about the histories of Sinti\, Roma and other related groups. \nSinti and Roma are the largest pan-European ethnic minority. Yet the past of Sinti and Roma is rarely part of history lessons. The result is that pupils of Roma and Sinti heritage may not encounter their past in history classrooms\, while myths and stereotypes are allowed to continue in the minds of the majority populations. There are a number of reasons why educators might shy away from these histories: A lack of knowledge about the pasts of these communities; a lack of cultural understanding leading to avoidance of what could be seen as a sensitive or emotional topic; or simply because they may be very short on time due to curricular constraints.  \nThis symposium will highlight why the inclusion of Roma and Sinti histories is important\, both in a Dutch and European context. It will additionally present concrete ideas for inclusive teaching strategies and lesson plans. The symposium will feature a plenary session with roundtable discussions\, followed by interactive workshops showcasing inclusive educational approaches as well as a city walk highlighting places of relevance to the Roma and Sinti communities in The Hague. The city walk will be organised and led by students at THUAS who have taken the minor ‘Inclusivity in the City’ along with members of the Sinti and Roma communities in The Hague. Connecting the local histories of Sinti and Roma in The Hague and the Netherlands with a larger European context\, the Symposium will aim to inspire dialogue and inclusion of marginalised historical narratives in education.  \nAdmission: €20. Ticket includes coffee breaks\, lunch and drinks. Admission is free for students and retirees. \nNote that registrations close on Monday 22 September \nProgrammeRegister

SUMMARY:Study day for teachers: Using Football To Teach Modern History (by Erasmus University Rotterdam)
DESCRIPTION:Register with Erasmus University Rotterdam\nMaking history concrete and close to one’s own experience: this is not always the strongest quality of our schoolbooks. On this special day\, we will share experiences from the Football Makes History programme on how teachers can use sport and sports stories to say something about the history of the 19th and 20th centuries and make it tangible and relevant for secondary school students of both lower and upper grades. This keeps the subject ‘close to the learner’ and allows for complexity and multi-perspectivity. \nProgramme highlights\nThe role of sport in society\nSport is not an island\, but a part of society. Developments in society have a major impact on how people can or want to do sport. Is sport part of a problem or is sport the solution? \nFootball and collective memory\nFrom its inception\, football has played a role in the formation of a collective memory\, fuelled by personal memories of and stories about iconic matches\, tournaments\, incidents and heroes. Moving and thought-provoking stories that\, put in a broader perspective\, can illustrate Europe’s history in a way different from the traditional ‘canon’. \nIconic football moments as teaching material\nMatches such as those during the 1914 ‘Christmas truce’ in the trenches\, the myth of the death match in 1942\, the 1974 World Cup with the ‘fratricidal struggle’ between the GDR and the GDR during the Cold War\, can be the starting point for lessons that make pupils think in an original way and contribute to their empathy and historical awareness. \nObjective & result\n\nLed by subject didactics and subject experts\, you work on designing concrete lessons about football as a starting point for lessons about history.\nYou learn more about iconic football moments and their broader 20th-century historical contexts.\nBased on this newly acquired knowledge\, you design individual lessons and lesson series on the 20th century and on historical thinking and reasoning\, using concrete and surprisingly appealing examples.

SUMMARY:Seminar: Truth\, Justice\, and Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:EuroClio partner the Robert Bosch Stiftung (RBS) are hosting a seminar in Berlin this week within the context of their ongoing project\, “Truth\, Justice\, and Remembrance“. The project and seminar deal with issues of remembrance in conflict and post-conflict societies\, addressing the fact that the way  such societies remember conflict and tension from the past can impact the possibilities for maintaining peace in the present. The way in which people internalize and reproduce certain divisive narratives can hinder attempts at reconciliation\, and the seminar intends to draw attention to the work of those that seek to challenge such interpretations of the past by advocating for a peaceful and inclusive culture of remembrance. In turn\, the seminar aims to encourage international exchange of these attitudes and practices.

SUMMARY:European Congress on World and Global History (ENIUGH)
DESCRIPTION:Under the overall theme “Ruptures\, Empires\, Revolutions” and on the occasion of the centennial of the Russian Revolution\, we seek to discuss the global context and repercussions of the revolution in particular while debating the role of revolutions in global history in general. We also encourage to explore the relationship between empire and revolution and to challenge still influential narratives\, like the supposedly universal trend from “empire to nation” through a comparative and global perspective on empires and imperial societies. \nFor more information check their website.

SUMMARY:Historical Thinking Summer Institute
DESCRIPTION:From 17 to 22 July 2017\, the Historical Thinking Summer Institute will take place at the Canadian War Museum / Canadian Museum of History in Ottawa\, Canada. \nThe Historical Thinking Summer Institute is designed for teachers\, curriculum developers\, professional development leaders\, historians\, museum educators and curators who want to enhance their expertise at designing history programs\, courses\, units\, lessons\, projects\, or educational resources that explicitly focus on historical thinking. Historical thinking is now a foundation for history and social studies curricula across the country and internationally\, and museum and heritage educators are similarly embracing it. \nAttendees of the 2017 Historical Thinking Summer Institute will participate in a variety of activities including presentations and workshops\, learning activities in the exhibitions at the Canadian Museum of History and the Canadian Ware Museum\, discussions of readings\, guest lectures\, and group work to explore six historical thinking concepts: evidence\, significance\, continuity & change\, cause & consequence\, perspective-taking\, and the ethical dimension of history. \nThese concepts will shape our exploration of the substantive theme of this year’s institute “Thinking Historically about Canada 150.” July 1\, 2017 marks the 150th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation\, an event that is not without controversy for many people in Canada. Throughout the different activities at this year’s institute participants will use the six historical thinking concepts to think historically about Canada’s past\, present\, and future. \nAll of the main sessions during the 2017 HTSI will be in English\, however\, some activities\, readings\, and workshops will be available in French if there are significant numbers of French-speaking participants. \nFor more information\, visit http://www.canadashistory.ca/Education/Historical-Thinking-Summer-Institute.

SUMMARY:Meaning\, Thinking and Learning in History Conference in Jyväskylä\, Finland
DESCRIPTION:Meaning\, Thinking and Learning in History seeks to strengthen research on history pedagogy by furthering cooperation between history education practice and research. History as both a discipline and school subject is in motion\, receiving increasing demands from the surrounding society. Focusing on textbook-driven narratives is usually not enough to meet the demands of the curricula or of students. The primary goal of this conference is to encourage collaboration and foster dialogue between professional historians\, education scholars\, graduate students\, and classroom teachers in order to find ways of balancing the scholarship on the pedagogy of history with increasing demands and classroom realities. \nOver the course of this two-day conference\, scholars\, teachers and practitioners will share their research findings\, offering examples of cutting-edge approaches and engaging in dynamic discussions that will help nurture intercultural dialogue and bridge scholarly and practical questions. Keynote lectures will be given by Bob Bain (University of Michigan) and Henrik Meinander (University of Helsinki). \nThe conference invites proposals for presentations\, panels and workshops by 15 January\, 2017. To learn more visit the teho2017en.wordpress.com and in twitter #teho2017. \nThe conference is bilingual\, in English and Finnish. The conference will be designed so that there is an English-language programme throughout. Meinander’s keynote will be in Finnish. \nThe conference is arranged by the group Teaching History Outside the Box of the University of Jyväskylä: Anna Veijola (Jyväskylä Normal School)\, Matti Rautiainen (Department of Teacher Education) and Simo Mikkonen (Department of History and Ethnology). The conference is part of a project funded by the Academy of Finland and coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Finland.

SUMMARY:CDRSEE Joint History Project Launch
DESCRIPTION:The Joint History Project was the original CDRSEE programme and remains at the heart of everything we do. The JHP was launched in 1999\, in an effort to change the way history is taught in schools across the Balkans. The founders – historians\, diplomats\, philanthropists — felt very strongly that to reach real reconciliation in the region\, you have to reach the grass roots\, the youth. The programme is therefore centred on education\, on providing history-teaching materials for teachers that convey multiple perspectives of the same events\, and on ensuring that these materials be put to use across the region. \nRead more about the project here: http://cdrsee.org/projects/education-projects/joint-history-project

SUMMARY:Workshop: Teaching about Perpetrators: Ethics\, Aesthetics\, Politics at Utrecht University
DESCRIPTION:The “Teaching about Perpetrators” workshop series aims to examine how our contradictory attitudes toward perpetrators in society and culture can in themselves be made the object of enquiry\, and explores the opportunities and challenges for teaching and learning about past atrocities through the figure of the perpetrator across disciplines. \nThis is the third workshop in the series\, organized in the context of the ongoing research project Faces of Evil: The Figure of the Perpetrator in Contemporary Memory Culture (supported by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research\, NWO). This time\, we will focus on the ethical\, aesthetic\, and political dimensions of the representation of perpetrators and the use of such representations in the classroom. What are the advantages and potential dangers of using self-representations\, for instance propaganda materials and videos disseminated across social media? How can the ethical\, aesthetic and political problems associated with these materials be made productive for educational purposes? What sorts of lessons can be learnt from studying perpetrator (self)representations and what are the problems and limitations associated with them in an educational setting? What about fictional representations? What role do empathy and identification\, disgust\, fascination\, and other strong affects play in pedagogy about perpetrators? Are we ‘allowed’ to feel empathy for perpetrators? Where is the line between understanding and forgiveness? What role does affect play in the politics of memory and memorialization with regard to the figure of the perpetrator? And\, conversely\, how can affect be integrated into the fostering of political awareness and engagement? \nThe workshop is open to scholars\, including advanced PhD students and early career academics\, educators\, and curators and will be concerned with pedagogical practices relating to the figure of the perpetrator at all educational levels. \nThe workshop will not take the form of panels and presentations\, but rather of a combination of seminar-style discussion sessions.

SUMMARY:UNITED network conference: “Living Together: Transform a divided past into our common future“
DESCRIPTION:The Conference will take place from 26-31 October 2016 and focuses on conflict resolution\, reconciliation and nation-building. “Our lives as a community depend on how we can handle cultural\, social and ethnic differences\, and make strength out of diversity. Our success as nations depends on how we can learn from the experiences of our ancestors and not repeat the same mistakes again and again. When we select our leaders\, we must pick them carefully\, avoiding those that wish to set segments of society against each other\, or appear to be fighting against imaginary or selected enemies instead of working for the best interests of all. As societies\, we must come up with better visions and strategies for Living Together\, and learn to accept that although this is not always easy\, it is necessary.” UNITED strongly invites activists from anti discrimination organisations to join their conference. Currently nominations are open and the deadline is 15 August 2016. \nFor more information on Programme\, latest updates and financial conditions check the UNITED Conference page.
