From the 14th to the 23rd of September DVV-International has – in cooperation with the German foundations Bundesstiftung zur Aufarbeitung der SED-Diktatur and Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge– conducted a Georgian-German summer school in Tbilisi dealing with the topic “Stalin era mass graves”.

Twenty students from Georgia and Germany accompanied by several experts from both countries – among them Dr. Ulrich Mählert, head of the academic sector of the Bundesstiftung, and well-known Prof. Dr. Jörg Baberowski from the Humboldt University in Berlin – met in Georgia’s capital to discuss the problems and challenges which the Georgian society has to face – as soon as any mass graves are found on Georgian ground. The mixture of sophisticated lectures, joint trips around the city and to presumably sites of mass graves as well as the collective gathering around Georgian food and wine helped to create a fruitful atmosphere of mutual exchange of knowledge and opinions between the students of both countries.
