Former Yugoslavia: Stability Pact Project
Project Aims and Objectives
- Develop a core-group of innovative history educators, representing the different ethnic, religious and linguistic communities in Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia;
- Set up and strengthening of a national and international inclusive network operating on a local, national and international level;
- Assist curriculum development through core-groups for the Learning and Teaching of history and lectures, workshops and advisory work;
- Set up and strengthen connections with national authorities related to history education;
- Set up and strengthen and extending relations with Council of Europe, OSCE, UNESCO, EU, EUROCLIO, national Ministries of Education and NGO’s;
- Organise workshops with focus on improving professional quality and how to set up and strengthen a History Teachers Association in Bosnia and Croatia;
- Raise awareness of the common needs of the region for school education;
- Raise awareness for the international dimension in school education;
- Develop organisational and financial management;
- Disseminate information about history education via different media;
- Encourage teachers to reinforce ICT as tool in history education.
Project Activities
- All possible activities to bring people together using former contacts in the region, the UNESCO, Council of Europe, OSCE networks and the networks of Projects on History and History Teaching carried out or running under the umbrella of the Stability Pact for South East Europe;
- 2 Training seminars for textbook 30 authors, trainers and teachers in Bosnia and Croatia (Activities in Serbia are carried out by the Danish Gymnasium History Teachers Association and the Serbian Association for Social History);
- 1 regional training seminar in Sarajevo for 30 innovative history trainers, teachers and others involved in history education from Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia identifying immediate, mid-term and long term needs for the learning and teaching of history with focus on diversity in society in the region;
- Creation of core-groups for the learning and teaching of history in Bosnia and Croatia, which will start organising themselves into History Teachers Associations;
- 3 fact finding and organisational meetings in Zagreb and Sarajevo;
- Participation in international activities on the Learning and Teaching of history of 9 key history educators from Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia;
- Report on the situation including ways forward.
Project Outcomes
On a National level
- A growing and active professional network of history educators in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia.
- Independent History Teachers' Associations in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia;
- Associations in Bosnia and Herzegovina , Croatia and the Federation of Serbia and Montenegro able and willing to take responsibility and ownership on a national and/or regional level;
- A growing awareness for the need of innovative history curricula respecting diversity in society;
- Enhanced use of information and communication technology by history educators by means of practical tools.
On a Regional level
- A growing network of responsible and innovative history educators in Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia willing to take their share and responsibility for history education which contributes to peace and stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and the Federation of Serbia and Montenegro;
- Definition of aims, objectives, outcomes and topics for teacher resource materials, to be developed in the coming 2 years;
- Local teams of managers, experts and authors, willing to work for the project in the coming 2 years;
- A growing awareness for the need for a regional and international dimension in history education in the region;
- Enriched national and international cooperation and understanding;
- Practical tools and skills for local, regional and international communication.
